So I have a $50 gift card to the big river site and after some Simichrome and other tools I have about $25 left over. Should I get a Victorinox electrician to replace my last one or a Rough Rider sunfish, half hawk or scout knife or ...?

I've got some old scouts and a SAK farmer and a few Rough Riders already...

Heck I'll take other suggestions if there's a gem that you'd recommend.

If really depends on what you want I would guess. If we're just going off what info you gave, I'd say get the vic

Since you already own examples from both brands, you should be in a pretty good position to make the decision yourself. Why do you need outside advice?

I guess I'm looking for some anecdotal advice. I know what to expect from the brands themselves but figured folks might have specific experience with a pattern that they'd recommend or reasons to hey one over the other. I really don't need any of them so I figured I'd check with some other folks for advice.

For that kind of money I'd get either an Alox Vic (Pioneer, Farmer, Electrician) or a Case CV peanut. Two of th ebest $30 knives you'll ever find. I don't think you can beat the utility of the Alox knives....so useful!

Or why not try something different like a good ol case sodbuster, maybe spend a few extra bucks and get a yellow peanut or maybe a trapper for around $35ish. There are tons of options out there, since you already have some examples of the ones you mentioned, why not try something different? You might be surprised of what's out there for not a whole lot of money

For something completely different - check out the Douk Douk. Great value, tough knife, with mojo to burn. The 200mm is standard size (4 3/8" closed). There's also a smaller version 160mm opened. Has as strong blade with lots of snap. A real stand out.

Find a nice Opinel with a special wood or an unusual blade or in a massive size like the 12 (I have a 12 and it's a lot of fun to use).

Or a Higonokami, to continue the trend of semi-obscure traditionals from, for me, "elsewhere." I really dig mine, and other people always seem more transfixed by it than any other knife I own, if that matters.

Yeah!

Lots of really great suggestions here. I've beat the Opinel drum quite a bit. A Douk Douk is a good knife and it's "neat" with its history and looks. Buck is good and it's more a traditional slipjoint look. I don't know if I would go Chinese Buck though (it's the steel grasshopper).

A Svord mini peasant is my latest love affair. If it's a work knife and thus awkward carry is usually solved then it really can't be beat.

All in all though, a Case small Sodbuster in CV is a knife you should have if you do not own one now. It's a really great knife.

Victorinox and Rough Rider are both good brands. I always carry a Victorinox Tinker, but use RRs a lot also.

Try something different..... Case Peanut is a good choice.

If you are stuck between those two mentioned, got an Alox Cadet?

I'm loving all of the suggestions and there's some I hadn't thought of (like the Douk Douk) that I'm now considering.
Although now I'm going to have even more that I want to try

Here's a picture of the Douk Douk. I love this knife right along side my Case, GEC's, SAK's. I carry this knife alot. I think it's a great knife to add if you already have a few traditionals. Something completely different and very cool.

Some background info ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douk-Douk

One thing to expect - detailed finishing is crude compared to American brands, but does not compromise the knife. The fit and finish are all part of the character of this knife. The spring and action are strong and smooth. No blade play. The handle is comfortable - no sharp edges.

I can't say enough about the Douk Douk. Lot's of good threads on this knife in the traditional forum.

Have Schrades, Marbles, Colts and RR's. All fine knives. Would recommend them to anyone.
