What should I coat this handle in to make it stronger?

A couple months ago, a friend of mine gave me this weird knife he got a swap meet. I don't know the exact make, but it was made by Chipaway Knives which from what I've read is a subsidiary of Frost. I really didn't have anything I wanted to do with it, so I started hacking up the handle (it was shaped kind of like a tree trunk, it didn't really feel that great in the hand). I don't know what the handle's made of, but it started to melt when I went at it with a dremel. My question is, what can I coat the handle in to make it a little bit stronger? Right now it feels like it's going to break in half if I do anything else to it, but I got the shape round about to what I want it to be. Any suggestions would help.

Maybe take the rest of the handle off and put a new one on , or give it a bunch of wraps with some cord. Frank.

Any pics? That would help. It isn't to difficult to do an epoxied cord or fabric wrap.

Could some heat shrink do it? I've had some stuff that was quite thick and strong. Otherwise, making some new scales out of wood or cord wrap might be the best long term option.
What about that camo form tape, wrapped tightly?
