What should I do if I had a knife at school?

Okay, so I'm 15 years old, and I carry a knife with me almost everywhere. Occasionally, I leave the knife in my pocket while I am at school, which it is illegal to have. What should I do in this situation? The last time, I just clipped it to my boxers and pulled my pants a little higher, but should I go to the principal or something next time?

Question - what are your plans in case you get caught with the knife and are thrown out of school?

rifon: are you saying I should try to hide it in my backpack or something instead of have it on me?

So there's no real answer of what I should do, besides do everything to prevent it?

Also, I think it is legal to have a weapon that is legal for you in a locked car in a school zone. Do you know if that's true, because that would be the best way to get it in a legal area (once I can drive, of course)

I use knives when I'm out other places, and sometimes I forget it in my pocket.

is there a way you can call someone to bring you your "medication" aka get your knife and take it off school grounds?

I don't know if you're joking, but that's not what I was saying.

To be more direct, I was saying that it's a real bad idea to have a knife on school grounds if doing so is illegal - not in your backpack, not in your locker, not on you, not hidden somewhere - nowhere, nothing, nada.

yes, the answer is not to take a knife to school.

if leaving it in a car is legal, then leave it in a car.

assuming you start your day real early, and are out other places before school where you use your knife, the only answer i can give you is to either take it back home or do without it until after school.

"i forgot it was in my pocket/backpack/locker" is not too far off the argument of "these aren't my pants".

The thing is, go mike, you're asking us in a public forum what to do when you break the law. I would really be surprised if you got any response other than "don't bring it to begin with", or "turn it over to the principal". If I tell you to "just keep quiet and hide the knife", I would be telling you to break the law, which I'm not gonna do.

The correct course of action is to turn it over to the principal. However, this does not guarantee that he won't put you in a load of legal problem. The internet is rife with (true) horror stories where kids forgetting their boy scout knifes got expelled, even prosecuted. Of course, if you hide it and you're found out, you might get into legal hotwater as well.

In a nutshell: I can't tell you what to do (other than always remember NOT to bring knife to school) without putting myself in legal trouble. Make your own judgment, and make it wisely. :)

What would you use a knife for at school?

I carried a pocketknife almost every day from the fourth grade through graduate school. I used it at school (in plain view of teachers and other students) for the same tasks I used it anywhere else: when I needed to cut or slice something. Mr. Beeston, my sixth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, Salinas, CA, once admonished me for forgetting to bring my knife one day when he needed to cut something related to a geography project.

One of the few advantages of being an "old man" is recalling an America when a majority of citizens still possessed a modicum of common sense and there wasn't an ever-growing mass of unconscionable laws and rules against conduct which isn't inherently wrong and a vast herd of neutered Americans who would have made "good Germans" circa 1938. The notion so many folks are keen to expel, even jail, a student for the heinous offense of having a pocketknife to peel or slice an apple at lunch or a multitude of other common tasks appalls me. :(

Thanks for everyone's input and advice. I'm trying to carry a fixed blade more, because I always remember when that's in my pocket.

I would be careful assuming that! here (in minnesota) and in my high school specifically, there have been several incidences where someone has left a piantball gun, or a box cutter from work, or whatever in their car, locked, and in the parking lot of the school....and they were severely punished by the law and by the school system despite the fact that the things in their car were not illegal for them to have!!!

in other words, keep it in the glove box, or out of site! hard to say what indiana and your respective school district has to say about weapons in parked cars....but i would find out for sure before assuming anything....

Best suggestion is don't have one at school. Of course

If you were to discover that you forgot to take one out of your pocket, I would NOT go to the administration as they will probably have to enforce school policy/state law, which is not something you want to happen.

If there's somewhere outside that you could hide it (bushes, etc) and pick it up after school, that might be the best idea. That way it is not in your possession. Or have someone come pick it up like was previously suggested. Otherwise I would hide it deep in your backpack, somewhere that is unlikely for it to be found.

Best plan is don't have it with you, or leave it somewhere off of school property. Just get in the habit of doing a pocket check every morning and you shouldn't have a problem.

As a last resort, if the knife is cheap, you can throw it away in a secluded trash can. This removes it from your possession and it will be impossible for anyone to prove you had it (unless your name is on it or something). Put it inside a piece of garbage and toss it. Er, wipe it down to get rid of prints too. Not likely a problem, but you never know.

While throwing away a perfectly good knife is not a fun prospect, it is preferable to any punishment you'd face. Remember that there is both law, and school policy. They are not necessarily the same. There are a precious few states in the US that do not have any laws against knives at school, but this does not stop schools from making their own rules.

It would be best for you to drop out of school and join a traveling carnival - the kind that sets up for 2 days at the local Wal-mart parking lot before moving on to the next town. Then you don't have to contend with those pesky school rules. And aside from getting you chicks, the term "certified Tilt-a-Whirl operator" on your resume is a real door-opener.
