What should I do if I had a knife at school?

Don't forget being an attractive option here:

What to if you wake up in class and realize you're knife is in your pocket? Leave it. Don't draw attention to it, don't use it, don't play with it, don't try to tape it to your ankle. ;)

Unless your school has metal detectors (and if it did, how would you get it in?) or conducts through pat downs on all students as some sort of daily ritual you'll be fine.

Make a habit of putting all your knives away at night.

"i forgot it was in my pocket/backpack/locker" is not too far off the argument of "these aren't my pants".

On a side note, I did see someone on the TV show COPS try the "these aren't my pants" defense. He claimed that he was staying with a bunch of buddies in a hotel room and he must have put on someone else's pants that morning. Needless to say he still got arrested for the pot that he had in his pocket.

And aside from getting you chicks, the term "certified Tilt-a-Whirl operator" on your resume is a real door-opener.

I know how to run a tilt-a-whirl. That's a "low man on the totem pole" job for a carny. A dull-witted chimp could run a tilt-a-whirl. The only skill involved is knowing how to make folks puke when they irritate you (you jerk the brake when the car is on the apex of a rise- hit it right a couple of times and you're gonna need the hose :D) A real carny runs the ferris wheel- that actually requires a degree of thought to operate.

Words cannot adequately express how irritating it is that carrying a pocket knife to school is a criminal act. I carried a knife to school every day from elementary school all the way through graduate school, no problem. It's ridiculous that kids are denied carrying the most basic of tools.

ive heard it more than a few times myself.

aside from being just a lame excuse, ultimately it probably isn't going to matter whose pants they are.

Get a time machine and go to school a decade or more ago, before things got really stupid. In your case, best to obey the law. And never go to the principal unless you want to be made an example of by idiotic zero tolerance goons. Just don't carry the knife to school. Hurry up and graduate.. You can carry the knife in College

It has been my experience through life, that law enforcement officers, and authority figures (like high school principles) do not want to help you. they want to teach you a lesson. Admitting wrong doing will only get you in trouble.

by nature of their position and job description, they exsist to catch you, not help you when you make a mistake, remember that and your life will be blessed in many ways.

Thanks everyone! I'll just be positive to check my pockets every morning, and keep my carrying knives on my desk in the open, so I'll see them and remember not to have one. The state laws says that I can have a knife in a car on school property.

IC 35-47-5-2.5
Possession of a knife on school property
Sec. 2.5. (a) As used in this section, "knife" means an instrument that:
(1) consists of a sharp edged or sharp pointed blade capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing, or tearing wounds; and
(2) is intended to be used as a weapon.
(b) The term includes a dagger, dirk, poniard, stiletto, switchblade knife, or gravity knife.
(c) A person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally possesses a knife on:
(1) school property (as defined in IC 35-41-1-24.7);
(2) a school bus (as defined in IC 20-27-2-8); or
(3) a special purpose bus (as defined in IC 20-27-2-10);
commits a Class B misdemeanor. However, the offense is a Class A misdemeanor if the person has a previous unrelated conviction under this section and a Class D felony if the offense results in bodily injury or serious bodily injury to another person.
(d) This section does not apply to a person who possesses a knife:
(1) if:
(A) the knife is provided to the person by the school corporation or possession of the knife is authorized by the school corporation; and
(B) the person uses the knife for a purpose authorized by the school corporation; or
(2) if the knife is secured in a motor vehicle.

Actually, I remember getting popped on here for something that was construed as promoting illegal behavior, so...the best answer is probably leave it at home.

I carried a pocketknife almost every day from the fourth grade through graduate school. I used it at school (in plain view of teachers and other students) for the same tasks I used it anywhere else: when I needed to cut or slice something. Mr. Beeston, my sixth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, Salinas, CA, once admonished me for forgetting to bring my knife one day when he needed to cut something related to a geography project.

One of the few advantages of being an "old man" is recalling an America when a majority of citizens still possessed a modicum of common sense and there wasn't an ever-growing mass of unconscionable laws and rules against conduct which isn't inherently wrong and a vast herd of neutered Americans who would have made "good Germans" circa 1938. The notion so many folks are keen to expel, even jail, a student for the heinous offense of having a pocketknife to peel or slice an apple at lunch or a multitude of other common tasks appalls me. :(

Here here!
I once got in trouble for carrying an old fashioned can opener to school! (Hey i was just opening a can of soup!) :grumpy:

Okay, so I'm 15 years old, and I carry a knife with me almost everywhere. Occasionally, I leave the knife in my pocket while I am at school, which it is illegal to have. What should I do in this situation? The last time, I just clipped it to my boxers and pulled my pants a little higher, but should I go to the principal or something next time?

Nope not unless you want to get arrested or suspended or have your knife confiscated. i did that when i was in 6th grade and that's what happened to me. just keep it in your pocket and make sure it doesn't fall out

wow i'm in china and i have to constantly tell my grade 4-6 students "are we cutting something for class right now?" no they say "then put your knife back in your pencil case or your desk". they all have thoose snap off hobby knives/box cutters that or so fun to open and close. One nice thing is most of the time in china there aren't so many stupid "safety rules" if you are an idiot and kill yourself the government figures they have enough people that you weren't worth saving :D or so it seems. On the other hand some things are just unsafe. like a set of maybe 50-100 2 inch diameter 6 inch tall wooden stakes spaced 1 to 2 feet apart for you to hop around on in a park. Fun? Yes, but it stuck me as a very good way to get severally injured if you ever fell.

It would be best for you to drop out of school and join a traveling carnival - the kind that sets up for 2 days at the local Wal-mart parking lot before moving on to the next town. Then you don't have to contend with those pesky school rules. And aside from getting you chicks, the term "certified Tilt-a-Whirl operator" on your resume is a real door-opener.

Also, remember to stop practicing dental hygiene. You want to be able to fit in with other carnival associates.

yes, the answer is not to take a knife to school.

if leaving it in a car is legal, then leave it in a car.

assuming you start your day real early, and are out other places before school where you use your knife, the only answer i can give you is to either take it back home or do without it until after school.

"i forgot it was in my pocket/backpack/locker" is not too far off the argument of "these aren't my pants".
Check the school regulations and state laws VERY carefully. If the car is parked in the school parking lot, then the knife is on school property. Granted, it is much less likely to be discovered in the student's vehicle (as opposed to a school locker, desk or other area which is usually subjected to random search) but it is still a risk. MORIMOTOM is absolutely right. Leave the knife at home.

When I was 15 (in the early '80s) it was common for kids to carry a buck to school, in a leather case on thier belts. I grew up in a rural community in central illinios and it was just common practice.

These days, with zero tolerance policies, if you find yourself accidentally in violation of a policy like carrying a knife at school, just slip the knife into your pocket and don't bring attention to yourself. It would be a mistake to go to the Principal and out yourself for violation of a zero-tolerance policy and depend on an administrators good judgement not to try to get you expelled.

u shud drop out. skules a wayst of time anyweigh :-D

seriously, though, once you've carried it onto school property, the offence is already committed. speaking up isn't gonna undo it.

think of the adult version: you don't have a concealed carry permit. you stuck your pistol in your waistband to carry it out to the car (legal in my state), but forgot to put it in the glove box. now, you're in the mall and realize you're still packing. do you find a cop and tell him?

I have to agree with AbnInfantry, it's a shame what our country has been reduced to. This kid obviously sounds like a law abiding citizen, heck he was struggling with the idea of turning himself in to the principal!
I graduated in 1987 from a school in Katy TX. Our Ag (Agriculture or FFA for those of you who aren't familiar) boys used to carry knives, and there was never an issue.
ANYTHING could be a potential weapon if that wa what the user intended to, will they outlaw sharp pencils next?

If the kid isn't using the knife improperly, I think they should be allowed to carry a pocket knife, but don't listen to me, I'm so crazy I think they should also be able to pray in school if they want.

What has happened to our beautiful country that we are bo longer free?
I totally understand not beng allowed to bring guns to school for obvious reasons, there is no need for a gun at school, but isn't a pocket knife more like a pocket tool?

I am sick to death of being controlled by our own government on every move we make.
My advice to the knife wielding kid is don't take it to school, but if by chance you forget it in your pocket one day, keep your mouth shut, leave it in your backpack in your locker, and try to get into the swing of checking your pockets.

Your Mom will appreciate that when she does your laundry anyway.

When you're over 18 and living on your own,the choice is yours to make. While still living at home and going to school the choice is not yours, leave the knife at home.

I am of the opinion the it's extremely short sighted to ban 2" pocket knives while passing out 6" scissors to students.
