What should I expect?

I am considering getting a Buck 110 from the custom shop. This would be my first Buck ever. Given the knives I currently carry, however, I am a little concerned that my reaction to the knife will be one of ambivalence, sort of a "ho-hum what's so special about this knife?" attitude. I currently have a few very nice high performance pocket knives that I do rotate through and use, including one from an MS. I also have a compliment of Spydercos, a CRKT Umnumzaan, and a Hinderer XM-18.

Are my concerns justified? I know that asking Buck fans if I should buy a Buck knife might be a little bit like asking a barber if I need a haircut, but I am looking for thoughtful honest input here. Will I get something different with a Buck 110 that is not already covered by some other knife I already have?

humm=
the S30V is not a ho hum steel
you will like it!
but the shape of a custom shop 110
well it is old school
if you dont like the production 110 shape you will think the CS verson ho hum also
so base your handle on what you feel edc 29.95 wally 110 would be

so looks in the belt sheath or
hot dang good cutting and looks!
if tech looks turn you on could be a 110 wont..
EDIT 1-6-10:
i called a contact at buck today
buck has gotten or will be getting
more SS Damascuss in
BUT
ALL Custom Shop marked Stainless Steel Damascus blades
are reserved for the new project with Pula Shell knife!!
and is not avabile for CS Knives no mater who you call!!:(
(ugh yes i tried:o and was told sorry but no by several )
the good news is some one thought it might be worth makeing a
drop point avabile from the custom shop or as a new LE!
if they get requests for it
:D:thumbup:;)

Longbow's advice is sound . When at Wal-Mart handling the 110 if you can resist buying it-- a custom 110 probably won't do much for you . The custom shop 110's fit, finish and amenities are above the standard 110 . High enough to make you happy I'm not sure . DM

Yeah, what Longbow said as well. The CS almost seems like a rite of passage for Buck nuts-not that I am trying to dissuade you. With the avialablity of s30v blade(cant get at Wallyworld-420hc) and very nice handle options such as Stag, Jigged buff and Elk, it can be an exceptional knife to
have for any knife lover, not just Buckaholics.

I think if you get one you will not be disappointed. Probably will give you the Fever.:D

Ps-is this for collection or use?

also check the 110 sticky for a good look at some customs and LEs

Where in the Custom Shop options do you see that dave?

IMO, if the OP wants something a little more special than the standard 110, I'd check out the auction sites for a LE first. The price is usually lower (in my experience) and the quality of workmanship is every bit as good as those from the CS.

I'll second the comments of those suggesting you make the $30 110 purchase at Walmart. If you like the egros of that knife you can move on to a custom shop order or limited edition as Plum suggested.

Your list of EDC knives suggests a preference for high-end knives. So I say a SS Devin Thomas Damascus blade in a NS frame with Sambar Stag is just the ticket for someone who wants to own a high-end classic.

You'll have to call for the Damascus however as its not an option on the website.

You need to go to the Buck website (linked at the top of the page) and go through the process of choosing options so you know what's available and cost. They have a photo that will show you exactly what yours will look like.

Also, as has been mentioned, call them to see if any other options are available.

Then you can decide if it will be special enough for you and you'll know the exact cost.

I would be getting it to be a user. That said, however, I am not afraid to put an expensive knife to good use, even if there are cheaper versions of the same knife out there. I know that once used, the value of the knife will go down and there will certainly be less expensive users available that likely would do 99.99% of the job that the one I would get can do, but I am not looking to make $ on this. I just want a few (well, maybe that should be a "few more" :o;) ) nice knives that I might be able to hand down to my kids someday.

Are you guys suggesting that by calling, something may be available that might not be otherwise if ordered through their site or found in a store like Cabelas?

Well you will have to call for Damascus. The other advantage to talking to someone is the ability to let them know what your after. I got an ATS34 blade and barky elk that way. Oh and it had a mirror finish too but that was just my good luck.

No way I get this knife without talking to the Customer Service folks.

Yes, you may have noticed Dave talking about Damascus steel which is unavailable according to the website......but get to the website first and use their program for building a knife of your choice (with pictures) and learn a little about the process.

Then call.

Sometimes things are available for a short time and without a phone call you'll never know about it.

forgot the SS Damascus option is gone
last time i asked Joe of it it was still on the web site
but he said it was almost gone
and i understood they would keep jest a few for warranty returns
so i do not think any would be available by calling ..

so- it has been a while off the site
soi dont think at this time that they have any SSD left..
did not mean to miss-lead any one!!

A general question about Damascus steel: Does it take laser etching well? Or does the etching get lost or muddled up with the Damascus pattern?

Well back when Pete was working there he said that they were ordering Damascus but that it was not going to be shown on the web site. I also heard more was on order for this spring.

Best to call and ask about it.

I also agree that the O.P. should play around with building knives on the site before calling.

SS Damascus has been on the site since Pete left...
what they got in then was too thin to use in 110..

They must have Damascus in their stock because they've come out with the Paua Shell Folding Hunter in Damascus steel.

As for Buck, in my memory, it's been tried and it failed.

Prototype was sold recently on e-Bay, I believe and no more were made on that particular effort.

Don't know if there were other ones, but as I recall from that thread, it didn't work that well as the black parts didn't show well enough.

I should of been clearer. Pete said that there were no plans show Damascus as an option on the "Build it yourself" option list for the custom shop on the website.

Dave are you saying that Buck has had SS Damascus listed as an option on the web site, like say the S30V blade??

They must have Damascus in their stock because they've come out with the Paua Shell Folding Hunter in Damascus steel.

Good point Wolf Dog. That fact seems to prove they've worked up another run of DM 110 blades recently. I guess that doesn't mean that they made any for the custom shop but I'll bet they did!!

So I'm sticking with what I said earlier...if you want a Custom Shop 110 in Damascus give them a call and it should be able to happen.

Ditto! what I recall too.

In a perfect world that would be true.

In Buck Custom world........maybe it's true.

Strange things happen......one says one thing and another says another thing.....there seem to be a lot of variables.

But calling is the only way to find out for sure......in fact, it's essential with a Custom Order if you want to at least have a shot at every possibility.
