I'm looking for some advice.

I've admired the CRK folders for years, but have not taken the leap.

What would you all recommend as my first CRK?

Check for other threads such as this. There was one just days ago that had a lot of hits and comments.

Either a large or small plain jane 21, they are cost efficient over some other models, they move good if you don't care for the knife ( which that's just absurd, you'll love it) and you'll be more prone to use it instead of babying it. :)

A plain, large Sebenza is a great start unless you really like the Umnumzaan or 25 or must have a smaller knife. You're not going to be going wrong with any of them at the end of the day. :)

I personally prefer the Umnumzaan over the 21/25 but they are all great knives.

The plane 21 is still CRK's flagship imo.

I would go with either the small or large 21 depending on your blade length preference.

Yep, a good old fashioned plain Large 21 clip point is the place to start... you cannot go wrong.

Large 21.
You can get a more specific advise, if you provide some details of your preferences, intented use or field of action...
If feasible, try to handle them in person.
hope this helps

Small or large Sebenza 21, depending whether you want a small EDC knife or like larger blades.

Do some homework, if you have a local dealer where you can hold each and decide for yourself which feels best. But if not , check out the specs and get yourself any of the knives mentioned earlier. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Good luck.

I would get one of Chris Reeve's frame locks! Ok I will get real. I would go with a small plain jane. A great size for most anything. Then again it depends on your enviorment, a large may be more useful. But as Ajack60 said lg. or small plain to start with. You are going to love what ever you get and then you will get another. :-)

The plain Large 21 Sebenza is CRK's flagship frame lock. If a Large is too big for you to carry (as it is for me), get the Small 21. And if weight is an issue, take a look at Knifeart.com's Carbon Fiber exclusives. They're too cool for school. :)

Do you prefer fixed blades or folders? Do you like natural handle materials? How important is appearance to you?

Really depends on what you like. What are the other knives you have in your collection? What tasks do you perform with your knives?

My first CRK folder was a large plain jane regular. The regulars are long gone so I will
Highly recommend a large plain 21. It's very simple, just like the regulars. Just a little
Different design is all. Once your hooked ( it WILL happen ), then graduate to the zaan or 25.

Now

If you REALLY want to jump right in and do it right, then search for a small plain Jane REGULAR Sebenza.

Next suggestion would be a small plain Jane 21 INSINGO.

And if neither of those grab you by the heart strings with a gentle tug then get any other plain Jane Sebenza you like.

Its hard to say what you'll like from what you given us. For the most part, we can only tell you what we like.

I'll suggest either a small or large 21. Plain or Micarta.
But you may want something with a bit more flare such as a CGG, UG, or an inlay model.

A good bit of difference between the small and large, so I would narrow it down to the size, and then decide which model you want. Good luck.

All great information , thanks for the input from everyone.

I'm going to try to handle a few, I currently EDC a para 2 or a ZT flipper right now.

small plain jane 21, great blade shape for all uses with a good point if needed, very capable blade in a small package, still very sturdy and robust for a small knife and come with the phenomenal quality you can expect from crks product, its my favorite knife i own and pushes all others from benchmades to spydercos out of my pocket, everything else just doesnt compare to what you get with the small 21 IMO
