A little background. I went to the bladesmithing course in Arkansas last year and have been building my shop as money and time permit. I am currently using 5160 and making forged knives. I plan to use this steel until I have passed my journeyman test some time next year after that I plan to start making Damascus blades.. I have a forge, a new anvil, a KMG grinder, and an even heat oven. I have welders (oxy fuel, Tig, Mig), lathe, mill and drills and all the other common shop machines. I will be able to purchase one tool this year should it be a power hammer. hydraulic press or a band saw?
Which would help now forging 5160 and be the most useful when I move on to Damascus.:confused:

i would get a press, it will do anything a hammer can do, just slower, but a hammer that can do everything a press can do is wee bit more expensive

Press +1. i have both and they each have their advantages. But for overall performance the press is much better IMHO.

i think someone needs to make a pock press so us people with out a shop can move it outside to use.

Heck you can tarp it and leave it outside. Chain it to a tree but i see wood splitters outside all the time. The nice thing about wood splitters is they do not take any electricity.
