Got mine stolen, so I got another one and am starting to fill it with what I could eventually need. What should I add to what I have:

First aid kit.
Pills: Tylenol and Pebto Bismol.
Some paracord.
Opinel #10 (mainly for food)
Speedy Sharp sharpener
Fenix L2P
Lighter (Zippo)
Purel hand sanitizer
Kleenex
Duct Tape

That's about what I usually have. Including college stuff. What else coudl be really useful?

small radio (am/fm/weather and sw if you can manage)
water bottle
water purification tablets
energy bar(s), hard candy -- just say "food"
space blanket
sunglasses
hat
gloves
multi tool
waterproof matches
spare batteries
zip ties

I have a MP3 player that has a radio on it.
Nalgene bottle is clipped outside the bag.
Sunglasses and gloves in my coat.
I will keep spare batteries, but if I really need some, I'll take the one in the flashlight.

yeah, is this an actual schoolbag, or just a euphamism?

with all that other stuff, how can you carry educational essentials? like books, notepad, recorder, etc?

Books, notepad, etc. Those were included in "college stuff".

A multitool or a SAK would be a good idea, so I could use it to cut tie wraps instead of a big knife that will end up in my face (yep, really happened).

Laptop with a fast cell based internet connection. You never want to be without BladeForums do you?

Alcohol and survival rarely compliment each other.

MP-1 purification tabs (30 to a card)
SAK or leatherman tool
bandana (preferably silk)
waterproof firestarting tinder (spark-lite or petroleum jelly impregnated cotton balls)
leather gloves

Somehow I get the impression this is more of a 'campus survival' kit ;)

All I typically carry with me is my sonywalkman cell phone with headphones, EDC knife, lighter/matches (but then, I smoke like a chimney) keys with photon II. Pretty much all I ever need, although once in a while I have wished I had my multi tool on me.

As far as opening beers and other bottles a knife works great if the handle sticks out while closed, as does a bic lighter. Now, one thing that would come in handy is a mini-corkscrew... But I have a vic tinker and don't feel like replacing it (or carrying it) so I'll stick with the pen method.

You are right Buck, it's not for survival in the wild. It's just my EDC kit.

As for the Corkscrew... well, I'm not really a wine drinker.

Yeah, I don't frequent it much myself, and when I do its usually the $10 4 liter jug... But there have been a few nights where a corkscrew would have been nice.

i was actually referring to some of the suggestions. at one point i was carrying so much crap around i felt like i had weights in my pockets. maybe carry extra stuff for a week or a month, then downsize the stuff you dont use.

Snacks i totally forgot about. I used to constantly eat sunflower seeds when I was doing delivery driving off and on over the past year. Those are a great way to pass the time.

I'm a college student. I carry a flint/magnesium combo, and a pocket knife everywhere I go. Other than that, all you should need is your wallet!
