this is kalama II or kII. its 13 1/4" overall with an 8" blade. its 1 3/4" wide. i have some tiger maple, wild maple or neoprene. which should i use. i also have some phenolic that would look awesome. i'll post pictures of the material(s) i have once a choice is made. there wont be a mirror finish on this one.

Richard,
I would vote for one of the maples.
Though if this is going to be a roughly used bushcraft knife with lots of chopping and battoning then the phenolic makes sense.

+1 on this vote. Love the tiger maple but as noted, if you're going to really abuse this thin I would go with the phenolic.

Is that hollow ground? Can't tell from the reflection.

i have been thinking of a use for the phenolic and this might be it. the blade is a chisel grind that has been convexed.

today with the help of another friend we heat treated the blade. i put the phenolic on and it looks good so far. i have to shape the phenolic down yet but i'm going to mill it instead of grind it like i do the neoprene. i'l finish it up on the grinder then post some pictures when i'm done.

its finished except for some fine tuning on the finish. i decided to put a satin finish on this one even though i wasnt far from having a mirror finish on it. the handle is phenolic and can be removed or switched easily. i might make some out of neoprene or maple to go along with it.

today chuck geyer and joe southerland came down and i decided to test k II out on some red oak limbs. it went through a 2" piece fairly easily for me and joe chopped with it some. his aim was a lot better than mine so it took him less hits. it was still shaving sharp after we were done. then after cleaning off the blade i took a piece of newspaper and poked the tip through just a little over half the page with the edge up. just by bouncing the blade it cut the paper like it was nothing.

that is a good looking knife.
the phenolic works for me.
gives it the "i am a working man's knife" look to it
or the "dont mess with me" look
nice work

Hi all,
Richard that knife and handle looks great. Yea I am with shotgun got a pic of the side profile. It that knife going to one of your freinds that hunts the wild pigs ?

Chat with you later,

Bryan

yesterday i needed something to do to get my mind off my legs bothering me so decided to thin the edge down a little bit on this one. it was already sharp enough to cut newspaper that was free hanging with the edge up and the papers own weight pulling the paper down with me just jiggling the blade a little. now it does it a little easier. i was going to make it thinner but i decided it didnt really need to be in order to cut good. i'll make a vid of me doing this one of these days. here are a few profile pictures, one is the handle and the other is a section of the edge and grind start. i might try to take a better picture of the edge.
