what should I use to glue wood and spacer together?

Most people just use any 2 part epoxy, though there are some favorite brands here. Acraglas and West Systems are two of them.

Just rough of the two surfaces prior to gluing - sometime smooth surfaces don't adhere as well.

While 5 minute epoxy is popular when you need to fix a broken chair leg in a hurry, a longer cure epoxy is best for handle assembly. The 5 minute stuff can gel up on you in about 1-2 minutes. I use 24 hour cure West System T-88.

Rule of thumb: longer cure time => stronger bond. I've had great luck with Loctite E-120 HP (120 minute cure time)... but longer is probably better. Caffrey was once told by a salesman for the regular 5 minute stuff that it's intended bond life is 5 years. Acraglas is rated for 50 years. I suspect West System is up in that range too.

I used Devcon 5 minute epoxy for 20 years, but I changed to Locktight 5 minute epoxy. Devcon is easier to clean up. Locktight bonds better and appears to be stronger, but cures slower. It takes 2-3 longer than the Devcon. You should wear gloves, if you use the Locktight. It's a pain in the butt to get off your hands.
