what size contact wheel?

8" serrated for hogging and rough profiling.

10" smooth for hollow grinding.

I think the 8" is the most versatile if you'll just get one wheel. Serrated makes it better at hogging, as was already said above. I've got nothing against a 10" wheel, but I'd take an 8" over it if I could have only one. It gives a real nice hollow on thicker stock and, imo, the 10" doesn't grind all that much higher. Also, the curve of the 8" wheel is just about the largest that's useful for curved clips and things of that nature, again imo.

I use the 8 inch serrated wheel the most, and a 10 inch wheel. The serrated wheel outperforms the smooth 10 inch wheel and improves the milage that I get out of the belts.

Innitially I found the serrated wheel too agressive and it made it hard to form crisp grind lines. I wrapped duct tape- several layers of it to the wheel to give me the best of both worlds- serrated and smooth, and this works well for me. That tape has been on the wheel for years and years.

Try it, if you don't like it the tape comes off easilly.

I have a 10" wheel I never use. I have a 8" on my home made rotary that I use a lot more. Of course it is handy, just loosen KMG arm, a bolt and roll tighten and adjust tool rest.. But then again I am a flat grinder so do I know about big wheels.

I flat grind more than hollow. For hollow I use a 10" wheel and am having a 14inch wheel made. I like the grind line as high as I can get it, rather than leaving a large flat with little function and more weight.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a smooth 8" wheel and have just gotten to where I'm really comfortable with my hollow grinding. That said I'd like to have a 6,10,12, and 14 just because. Do I need that many?nope Do I want that many? yup
