Update: upon further research spring assisted is illegal in Oregon also so I need a plain flipper.

Noob member long time lurker here. Thanks for the add. I could use a little help after watching a dozen videos and searching websites. Having automatic is great, but illegal in OR off my property, so I'm trying to find a small, utility grade/ cheap knife.

I love my 1.9" Boker Sub Kalashnikov, for around the farm - cutting feed/ supply bags open, hay bale strings, plastic shipping straps, ropes, cement bags, boxes, anything really. I counted using it 21 times on an average day. Many times I use it with my hand already holding something before I cut it e.g. setting a bag down, holding it upright, pulling out the knife and cutting it open using only the other hand.

Hoping for:
-About 2" or less blade otherwise I won't have room for it. I'm aiming for 5th pocket at the largest.
-Flipper w no assist
-Prefer lighter handle material aluminum or G10
-pocket clip not necessary, but prefer deep pocket if its an option, otherwise I will just remove it.

So far I found:
Kershaw Ember or spoke doesnt look as nice to me, CRKT squid,

Thanks guys

I was about spring assists until Flippers hit the scene. Flippers are just as fast and easy with no chance of getting nicked when I’m not paying attention.
Ok, I thought they were the same thing. Any recommendations?

Flippers have a flipper tab on the side of the knife with no springs. You just press down on the flipper tab like it's a light switch and the blade flies out via leverage. Why 2 inches? Legal issue?

2" bc then I will actually carry it vs leaving it home. I find I leave all my larger ones at home or leave them in a drawer. I prefer 2" and don't mind it in my pocket, it's just what I prefer ;)

The Runt was what came to mind first. But we don’t know if Autos are an option as well as the $$$.

Not everybody read your whole message.

Here is what KnifeCenter (a retail member here) has in stock:

If you like assisted knives, get an assisted knife. Ignore the misguided people who have never tried to open a knife with one hand while your other hand is holding a 200 pound ram who does not want you to cut off the vine that is wrapped around his leg.

I used an assisted knife (SOG Flash II) on my small farm for about ten years. It was great, but it disappeared a few years ago. I have been trying ever since then to find a comparable knife. The current SOGs suck. I have a couple Kershaws that are pretty good, but I don't like frame locks. The best one I have found is the Benchmade Volli, but it is discontinued and bigger than what you want and it is black. After losing several knives out in pastures, I strongly prefer orange or some other really bright colors. Kershaw does have some bright colors in small assisted knives.

I would suggest getting a serrated knife for baling twine, rope, etc. Somebody here (I wish I could remember who, but I'm getting senile) recommended the Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark for cutting baling twine. I have the hawkbill version, and it is great for cutting strings that are tight deep into they hay. I had to take it apart three times to adjust the spring to get it to flick open properly. But not everybody cares about the Spydie Flick.

I really like my Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion.
If it had 14C28N steel, it would be the perfect knife for me.

Auto is illegal in Oregon in public

I was thinking assisted was a flipper also, but now that I think about it I have a non spring assisted flipper and it is okay. I have a 4 inch flipper and its fine but too big. Also assisted would be nice after having an auto

You know my life ;)

Price range?

Right off the bat, the 3 that come to mind are around $150.
I'm happy with my $35 boker, but need a flipper. I found out assisted is illegal also.

I would say $50 max like a kershaw, Boker, D2 steel or better is nice if possible. Sharpness out of the box doesn't matter to me, as I spend time on the blade anyway.

That looks good and it was on the top of my list, but I guess I cant do assisted pocket knives in OR, funny that you can in CA if under 2". I wonder if I can remove the spring to make a normal flipper.
