What small, simple, mundane task do you use your EDC for every single day?

Howdy folks,

Although I enjoy seeing pics of knives being used and getting dirty, to be totally frank, I do 3D animation for a living and even though I grew up on a farm I'm not much of an outdoorsman.

So, my EDC lives an easy life and the one task it's used for day in and day out is to open the little mylar bags of coffee at work that otherwise go off like a grenade if you try to pull them open by hand. A small, mundane thing, but it beats sweeping coffee grounds up off the floor.

Just wondering what one small, mundane task BF members use their EDC for every single day?

Best,

Heekma

Every day,one of my "Five a day",cutting a piece of fruit.
I do that too working in a produce department of a grocery store.

Mostly trimming vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, and celery. Sometimes corn in summer and fall. I'll also cut samples of fruit for the customers(a task solely for my fixed blade Dozier knife for obvious reasons:rolleyes:). Nothing really "hard" aside from the corn(the toughness of the stalk will roll the edge, the natural silicates will wear on blades worse than cardboard).

All-in-all, I feel I don't get to use my knives enough during my day job, and so I've been looking for a transfer to a meat cutter position(no luck though).

Mine gets used opening bags of birdseed, although that's not everyday. I swear I feed every bird within a half mile radius of our property.

I also cut up my "apple a day", along with some provolone cheese... well maybe not everyday but I try.

The three simple mundane tasks that my knife gets used for every single day are cleaning fingernails, opening boxes and opening letters.

I often have a moment of introspection where at approximately sundown, I go to the boulevard and slowly eat an apple slice by slice.

I'm a cemetery caretaker so i have to trim around the stones with a line trimmer. The .095 heavy trimmer line i use is tough to cut and is a great test medium for different edge angles, coarse or polished edges. I probably make 6 or 7 cuts a day.

I cut fruit almost everyday for lunch. It's usually a fuji apple or a wedge of mini seedless watermelon.

Awesome thread!

For me, I use my EDC knife to open letters every single day.

The smallest and most mundane task that my knives handle everyday is cutting tape. Cut tape to open boxes, cut tape that's holding bundles of wire together, cut tape to wrap the wires in the first place, cut tape that's holding on bubble wrap or some other type of wrap. Tape, tape, tape!!

In between my freshman and sophomore years in college, I spent a whole summer running a weed wacker at a golf course, so I can relate. My EDC back then was a tiny Buck 527. Worked great.

Those hand-cooked potato chips come in mylar bags. I'd like to meet the guy who hand cooks potato chips, although he probably wouldn't want to shake hands.

Any excuse to use a knife will do...
Opening mail, birdseed and cat food bags, and those armored-plastic blister packs that everything's sold in nowadays.

Shave, open letters, open packages of food.

That's about it and even those aren't daily.

Working in food service, mine opens boxes, cases of sugar, and the plastic ring on 5-gallon pails. Using a sebenza seems a bit overkill for these tasks, but I love it.

Isn't it a chore to get that gunk off your blade? That's mostly why I only use my box cutter for that.

@noctis3880 a little spray of windex takes the gunk right off.

I get at least one package at work per day, I open those and I open the mail.

Having a knife comes in handy here and there but--let's be honest with ourselves--99% of us who carry fancy knives around do so because they're cool, not because we need them that much.
