What solder/flux do you use??

I use Stay Clean but have found a certain love for the solder paste from Pop's. I still lightly flux the pieces when using the paste though.

Bob Loveless in his book uses AllState 430 solder. I have used it successfully to solder 416 ss guards to ss blades many times. I get the AllState 430 solder from my local welding store.

Bill in that same article in Loveless book he also talks about flushing the
joint out with Muriatic prior to applying the flux, far and away the best
method I have ever used.
Ken.

I have tried both methods and settled on stay brite and stay clean flux. I did'nt really get a better result by flushing with muriatic. Ken what is your procedure, maybe I was doing something wrong, because Mr. Loveless does the best guard work I have seen.

My procedure was have the guard up solid either by fixture or otherwise and start heating, usually I've got it hot enough to boil the muriatic before I put
it on. Mustard bottle of muriatic and really flood it on (please do this with plenty of ventilation or the floor will be coming at you fast) After the initial boil apply the sta-clean, usually right at the sta-clean going into brown the solder will flow, Quik Q-Tip swipe on either side and very little clean up after it seemed to work better than just the flux. Hope this helps.
Ken.

I use Eutectic 157 and the eutectic flux. This combination will solder stainless to stainless or carbon steel or aor nickel silver brass to carbon or stainless. The only time i have had problems is with damascus and the problem was that the flux solder wicked up past the guard into the blade pattern
