I was wondering what everyone does for a living from here?
I am a Salesman.
Looking at some of the threads such as "what do you use your knives for" or "Clamshell packaging"
I am figuring there are a lot of Postal workers or storeman and packers here that do lots of Letter openings and Cardboard cutting, some tape severing etc, Rope merchants?
Others are more from the display background that might be Museum curators or Taxidermists perhaps?
What say you?
My knives, the couple I have, get a flogging camping, Fishing and in days gone by Hunting.
I do open the odd letter or box once in a while but I usually grab the nearest kitchen knife or tear the letter open.

I'm a high school teacher. At work, my old style Leatherman Wave gets frequent use opening packages, fixing jammed staplers, printers and copy machines, fixing or adjusting random things around the classrooms, and sometimes even items belonging to students. I'd rather be self-reliant than call a maintenance guy every time there's a problem.

At leisure, my tools and knives get used for camping, motorcycle touring, and stuff around home.

Self employed business owner and FireFighter. I use a lot of fixed blades in both these jobs for various task.

Retired electric utility engineer and manager, (EE degree and MBA) with experience in electrical transmission, distribution, substations, metering, and materials/equipment testing. My retirement job is full-time caregiver for my disabled 25 year old daughter Kimberly, who was a hit and run victim at age 21.

Grew up in rural environment, roaming the woods, hunting, fishing, the kind of boyhood everyone should be lucky enough to have. Knives have always been a natural, accepted part of life, was given my first by my parents when I was 4 years old.

I'm an artist and carpet designer- contrary to all of the naysayers when I was growing up and going to school, I actually make a very good living. My family has a lot of land in the mountains, so as a kid I spent summers and weekends working outdoors, hunting, fishing and all that good stuff. So like Mike H, knives have always been part of my life. I've carried a knife almost every day since I was 9 years old, and I've never gotten myself into any trouble with one. I carried a knife all the way through school, back before the "zero tolerance" hysteria. I use my knives now mostly for opening packages, since I live in the city.

Mike I am sorry to hear that my friend.
I am sure you do a good job and are a fine Dad for Kimberly.
You have brought a tear to my eye, I have 4 young ones that keep me busy.
What part of America are you at? I have been over there several times. California for our Honeymoon and Minneapolis for work.
You take care Mate.

I'm a former soldier currently in the Reserves, a landlord, a lab assistant, and a full time student pursuing a Chemistry degree. I used my pocketknife a lot in the Army (and surprisingly got more funny looks for it than I ever have in college), and it comes in handy while doing home repairs. Last year I was a salesman at a sporting goods store and used it a whole lot there opening boxes and cutting tape.

I was a NYC LEO but after years of that I went into the Real Estate field and now manage several commerical real estate locations ( malls, office buildings) in NY,NJ and PA. I have always collected knives and carried one since I was ten. Fishing is my big past time......

I use my hunting knives now to prepare the family BBQ :-)
I have crappy kitchen knives so I tend to use my old hunters to cut up the Steaks and Chicken.
I am sure my wife thinks i am a nut.
I used to Hunt a lot years ago and we would get everything from Rabbits and Foxes to Kangaroos and Wild Pigs.
Even when we were fishing you needed a solid knife to handle some of the bigger Barramundi and Tuna, sometimes you get small to medium Sharks and Rays that can not be released easily and have to go under the knife.
Now its mainly "Letters & Boxes" :-) and threatening the Kids.

What do you catch Tom?
Saltwater or Fresh?
What species are there?
I was a really keen fisherman back in the day.

I am a big fresh water fisherman. I am within three miles of the ocean, but I aways like the lakes and ponds and steams. There is a good amount of large mouth bass, trout, and all types of pan fish. I have a 14 year old and I take him and his friends all the time......

That sounds great Tom,
I was in Minneapolis in 2005 and they say the fishing there is great, land of 10,000 lakes or something.
I did not get a chance to Fish on this trip but I had some Fish in the restaurants and it was fantastic.
I have mainly fished Saltwater here, mostly fast surface pelagics with live bait or high speed lures.

Hi,
I'm a retired Ass't. Power Plant Manager. I have a BSEE, MSNucE, & an MBA. I had two combat tours in Nam in the late 60's right after college graduation, and reached the rank of Captain in the USMC, and had the privilege of commanding a Recon Unit. We have two sons, both of which are career military officers, one in the USMC, and the other in the USN. We are extremely proud of our boys.
My other hobbies are photography (Nikons) and bass fishing. I have a 21 ft Triton DC tournament bass boat. When I was younger, I used to hunt a lot.
Take Care,
John

Hello,
I work Plant operations at a college in baltimore. Crawling through ceilings, steam tunnels, walls. You never know when you've got to make a hole in something. One of the best ones: Dorm room door lock got stuck and could not be picked pried or losened, had to use an Emerson Commander to peel off the outer layer of door to unlock and ge the student out.

Spent and spend as much time out side and in the woods as possible and have always had a knife or knives to go with me.

Patrick

My wife and I both make a very nice living as artists. She's an advertising art director/designer and I'm an illustrator and college art professor. Nice to hear others making a good living as artists. Nothing I hate more than the "starving artist" stereotype.

My EDC knives get plenty of use in the studio and in class. I'm always cutting or trimming something for myself or my students. I do get some strange looks at first when I pull out my Spyderco Manix in class but the slipjoints usually go unnoticed.

Wow, John how do you manage to fit it all in?
It sounds like you keep yourself busy.
I am 43 and starting to feel old, I need to wake up to myself and get a grip. Great stuff.

Interesting thread...

I'm an electronic systems salesman. My wife is a high school teacher. We have two boys in college, one studying in the UK right now. I've carried a pocketknife since I was 7 or 8. Let's see ... that would be ... alot of years! :D My passions are fly fishing for trout and my wife and I are "bird nerds". My knives are used when I'm fishing, when I'm in the woods and around the house.
