What Spydercos were just ahead of their time?

Many of the now discontinued Spydercos are only valuable because not a lot of them were made but some of them were ahead of the time and it took a while for knife lovers to catch on to them.

I can name several that seem like they were just ahead of their time and if they were reintroduced with new materials, I believe they would be huge sellers.

1. Large Calypso. It took a while but people love this knife and for good reason. Make it with dual liners and you will have a stonger better knife.

2. G-10 Police, that flat ground blade is just a cutting machine. It won't be long before we see another G-10 Police I suspect but I fear it won't have a flat ground blade.

3. Yojimbo. It seems lie it was gone before it had a chance. This one is interesting because it has a blade that is designed for SD but also makes a great work knife. The handle was a little strange and the tip up carry on this model was a mistake based on the shape of the knife. With some tweaking, I think this could could come back as a staple in the Spyderco line.

The gunting should be added to that list:thumbup:

Also that one with the funky handle. I forgot the name but the handle was kinda shaped like a dog bone and the blade had a gentle curve in it. What was this knife?

Wha? I thought the Yojimbo was doing just fine. I love mine. For anyone living in a sub 3" area, you will not find a better SD blade(maybe, maybe the Gunting). I think the Dodo is ahead of its time. People will begin to see the value in small recurves. That said, I don't mind it being ressurrected as a wharncliffe or hawkbill. The funky one you mention, Rededge, is the Shabaria if I'm not mistaken.

And if current sale rates of the Gunting are any indication, it was definitely before its time. Pity we won't see Spyderco making any more of these.

I agree with eojk. Heres a picture of the Shabaria:

The first Spyderco ever, the Worker, was a ground-breaking innovation.
First company to use a clip, first company to pioneer non-automatic one-handed opening.
Awesome bit of knife history if you can find one.

I would add the Bob Lum Chinese folder to this discussion. That elegant knife was a winner from start to finish and an incredible value to boot. It got disco'd rather abruptly and I think Spyderco realizes they may have pulled the plug a little too soon. They are planning to re-run it as a sprint with Hitachi's ZDP-189 blade steel. Don't let this one pass you by. Snag two if at all possible.

I consider the Chinook II the most underappreciated knife in history.

That said, I have always admired the Worker.

I would say the "Worker" also. Nobody thought it would have the market impact it did. They thought it was too ugly and what the heck was that big hole for anyway?

Here is my favorite. The tinkerbell of Spyderco's. I wish I could find a Spyder-key Hummingbird, NIB. It only has one big serration on the whole blade.

J.D. Smith

I really do agree with Halfneck about that JD Smith. What blew me away about that knife was the fact that it was not appreciated in the least bit until it was discontinued.

I got one I even like a little more than that one that was way ahead of it's time. The big C-44 Dyad is something I think that knifemakers & knife companies should have done a long time ago. A knife with one great fully serrated blade and one superior plain edged blade. I just don't know why they don't do another design similar to it or design a complete new 2 bladed knife totally re-designed. The Dyad is a double bladed knife that is 100% functional for about every cutting chore imaginable. But it doesn't surprise me that Spyderco was the first company to give us a premium double bladed knife. BRING BACK the C-44 Dyad ( not the little one).
