What Spydie to get

I have been looking at a lot of reviews and I am trying to figure out which Spydie I want to get. I really want to get a Paramilitary 2, or a Manix 2, but I unfortunately do not have that kind of money. I have been wanting a Spyderco for about 15 years now, every since I saw them at the state fair in California. I have not had any luck finding a shop in Orlando that carries them so that I can see which one I want. Right now I EDC my Kershaw chive at work. I am an automotive tech and I need to cut stuff, but my other knife that EDC outside of work is my Kershaw blur tanto, I really like this knife, but is a bit bulky in my pocket at work.

So I have been looking into the Endura 4 and the Delica 4, I also like the Stretch and heard a lot of people like it, I am not sure about the way it looks. I see the handle on the Endura and it looks huge. I have been looking for a knife that is good for EDC, but could also work for self defense and that is why I am looking into lockbacks. I was wondering if I could get some input so that I can put my money to good work. Thanks a lot.

I highly recommend the delica/endura; there's a reason they are spyderco's best sellers. The caly 3 and caly 3 cf are two other favorites of mine, they have a slightly different blade shape then the delica, but are about the same size. If you prefer a longer blade, there is the caly 3.5 which is the length of a paramilitary 2. The paramilitary2 is an absolutely excellent choice, only thing I don't like is the open handle...this is due to me carrying too much stuff; you have to be aware of whats in your pocket or keys, etc can go inside the handle and nick the crap out of the blade.

As for self-defense, if you absolutely have to carry a knife for this reason, get a pointy dagger and never use it to cut anything...keep it sharp for when its needed. This way it will go through clothes, take less force to puncture skin, and if you're lucky enough to hit a major vein/artery will cause the attacker to bleed out.

Yeah I like the Caly also, it is just a bit out of my price range. I am not sure which to get though. I do not know if the Delica will be big enough or if the Endura will be too big. I have no Idea what they feel like...all I can do is go through reviews and then buy online. I don't understand how I can live in a big city like Orlando and not find any place that sells Spyderco, it is ridiculous!

I buy all of my spydercos off eBay. There are very reputable (and a few evil ones) there, but if you sort by buy it now price/lowest price, you can find good deals by combing through all the spydies.

If you're interested in the caly 3 model, I have one up for sale in the for sales thread. It has a carbon fiber handle and zdp189 steel; Since its your 1st spydie, I would be willing to give you a hell of a deal to get you addicted...:D Just don't tell the wife, she might get pissed. I was asking $95 shipped out, but I will let you have it for $45 shipped out.

A spydie fanatic special!! I'm well known for doing this...I might be crazy I don't know...LOL Just leave really damn good feedback.

If interested let me know. I take paypal, or if you don't have that I can do a MO. Look at my feedback here on the forums and trust away.

I looked on ebay, and from reputable dealers, a manix 2 goes for buy it now at $75. A paramilitary usually is buy it now around $120-130 at a good price. The manix has 154cm and the para 2 has cpm s3ov. Generally, s30v is the winner of the two. A delica and endura can be had for quite a bit less.

According to this 2007 thread on the Spyderco Forums:

Just next door in Lake County there is an excellent Spyderco dealer called Ruff's Saddle Shop. It's outside of Umatilla (about 30 miles west of ORL on US 27/441, a-k-a North Orange Blossom Trail), but it's worth the trip. They have almost online prices for a large collection of current NIB Spydies.

There's one next door (or there was one next door in 2007).

I would recommend saving up for a Para 2 (you can get them from online dealers for less than $100 - so I wouldn't necessarily go by the ebay prices you're seeing). The Compression lock is very strong and the blade is thicker than that of the Manix 2 (at least, its thicker than my FFG Manix 2 CTS XHP - I can't speak for the hollow-grind version). This is honestly my favorite Spyderco other than possibly the Superleaf (but the Para 2 is skinnier in the pocket and lighter weight).

I would seriously consider getting a small fixed blade for self-defense. Look at an ESEE Izula or one of the smaller Beckers if you're on a budget and can't pick up a Spyderco, but fixed-blades make much better self-defense knives than folders.

Yeah I saw that also, but that is like an hour away from me, I might have to make the drive one day though! Thanks for all the help.

I will be in Orlando this weekend and can bring all my knives if you want to fondle some. I have the exact knife SF offered you if you want to hold it first but at that price you can't go wrong. Let me know if you are interested and maybe Sat night can meet up somewhere around Disney or I could visit my aunt in winter park and meet somewhere around there. I have quite a few Spydercos as well as other brands. Just thought I would throw it out there.

I appreciate it and would take you up on that offer although I am going to Naples this weekend so I cannot. I am going to buy that knife that SF offered me....I cannot pass it up at that price! Thanks again for the offer, I totally would meet up with you if I was not going down South.

...well I just bought a Caly3 cf zdp-189 off of Spydie Fanatic, I cannot wait to get this! I could not pass up the deal. I will most likely get a delica in few weeks and try that out also. Thanks for all the help guys. I think you will be seeing a lot of me in the future!

I'm going to mail your package out now. USPS doesn't have tracking like UPS, but they have delivery confirmation which tells when the package was delivered. If the number is checked sometimes it will show stops, but not always. If your wanting a delica, you're could watch eBay auctions. I've bought several used 3rd generation ones cheap and then sent them in to the spydie factory for sharpening...its just $5 return shipping/15 days wait and you're ready to rock!!

I appreciate it. It is not that I don't trust you, I don't know you, but you seem like a good guy. I just want to see where it is and when I am going to get it. I am so excited to get this knife in my hand! I cannot wait until I get it.

About the Delica....How do I tell if it is a fake? I know there are some obvious fakes out there, but I know that there are some people that can make good forgeries. Thanks for all the help, I will try to do some research.

They are available, you are just looking in the wrong places. What is a 1 hour drive on a day off anyway? Knives can be found inside of just about any gun store worth their salt. Also, there are sporting good stores, fishing/camping suppliers, military surplus stores, etc. A little searching does go a long way. As far as buying a good knife, it's just like any other tool. You try to not buy 99 cent screw drivers because you know what will happen to it the first sign of real use. Same goes for wrenches. A good quality knife should be treated the same. You do not need to have a $200 cutting tool.

Also, carrying a bulky knife (I do not consider the Kershaw Blur bulky at all), over time you get accustomed to having a knife in your pocket. As a mechanic, I doubt you would wear khaki slacks to work, more like some durable Dickies pants of some sort. A 4-5 ounce folder should not be felt at all especially with quality work pants.

Its not really bulky, I just notice the chive a lot less because of its size. \
I just started really looking into knife shops, I got back into Spyderco because of BF and I really want one. I wanted to see them in person so that I know what they feel like and compare them. I will look around and see if I can find them.
