What stains carbon steel?

You could just go the other route and cut the rust off at the pass. Go to a well stocked gun store and get some Birchwood/Casey Perma Blue Paste Gun Blue and make the whole Khukuri blade a nice uniform dark bluish black color.
 
OK for cutting wood, but doesn't that stuff stink bad enough to put one off using it on a KK that cuts food?

Selenium compounds if I recall correctly. While the body may need a very tiny ammount of selenium, I don't know that a relatively huge amount would be a good thing.
 
Yeah, that could be a problem. Should at least buff any blued blade thoroughly with steel wool.
