My first knife when I was at 6 was a hardware store Barlow. At 52 I like both traditional and modern knives and usually carry them in combination. Usually my large Sebenza with a slip joint. I rotate through a bunch of them. Nothing like peeling an apple with a slippie.
My first was from my grandfather as well as my second traditional. The first a small two blade pen or peanut like knife. Hibben Spencer Bartlett and I'll never forget it. Still have it tho it was hardly usable for anything by the time I got it which was why I got it. The second was quite nice and quite user friendly, a Ulster Electricians which I also used and beat up until retiring it for a Boker, then a Camillus, to the present STR-EK in my pocket now. I've always carried a traditional in my left pocket. A clip type one hand opener on my right. Many times the traditional in my pocket was a single blade electricians. Then the blade was the clipped model.
What started me? Simple, it wasn't a question of age or Traditionals being the only norm, my family weren't interested in knives either. When I was very small, 7 or 8 I found some broken worn-out pocket-knives in an old tool drawer, I was fascinated by them because I thought them beautiful. I still do, and that's how it'll end
G10 is so practical, has a great feel in the hand, grippy etc. etc. etc... A modern knife is a very pragmatic item. But if I want to ENJOY cutting something, the feel of jigged bone, the grip of stag, the warmth of wood, that's what I want.
I started out with slipjoints, and progressed into the more modern stuff, and lost interest in them. I started collecting GEC, and Queen, and the rest is history. My resurgence in interest in them was very natural, I feel like my carrying of a fixed blade as a main EDC, has negated much value of more modern folders.
I had a SAK when I was around 8 or 9. When I was 12 I went to summer camp and bought this guy
It never left my pocket until I saw the movie Cliffhanger and saw Stallone use a spyderco on rope. Just like that the whittler was sent to the bottom of my scout pack and I travelled down the modern path. About 2 years ago I was goin through some boxes and found that old scout knife. It didnt take me long to find this sub forum and now the rest is history.
