Blade:

- Mike Norris stainless damascus?

- CPM420V

- DAMASTEEL

Bolster:

- Eggerling mosaic

- Stainless damascus (Eggerling?, Norris?)

Thanks for any and all input.

If it were mine, I'd go with either the Mike Norris damascus or 420V for the blade, depending on whether the knife would be a user. For bolsters, I've never seen anything prettier than Eggerling damascus. There are a bunch of folders on the various knife dealer websites with Eggerling bolsters, so you can determine which pattern you like best.

On the damascus folder I have coming up, I specified a Mike Norris twist pattern blade and bolsters/backspacer of the same damascus. Don't forget about the backspacer; I've seen some folders with damascus blades and bolsters but with stainless backspacer... it looked a bit odd to me.

I would like for it to be a daily carry / light user. I'd like stainless damascus for the blade, but how well would it hold an edge? Is Norris's better than DAMASTEEL? I'd also like Eggerling mosaic, but shouldn't I be concerned about corrosion resistance? Is stainless damascus avail. with rose or raindrop pattern? Thanks again guys. Also, I had considered using only handle spacers rather than a true back spacer. What do you think about this?

Jackyl, I'm excited for you with your new custom. I should be receiving my first (a fixed blade) in about a week.

In all honesty, my opinion, some decisions are best left with a Man and his Maker! I know you're going to be happy with whatever you decide on.

There was a thread about damascus as a user steel a few weeks ago in the general forum that you might be interested in; it seemed to me that not a lot of people actually use their damascus blades, so there isn't a lot of information about performance out there. The only reason I'd pick Norris over Damasteel is that I think it looks better.

The reason I personally wouldn't want damascus on a using knife is that if it gets scratched it will look pretty bad, and it would be difficult to refinish, since you'd have to etch the blade again.

BTW, I forgot to mention in my last post that the knife I'm getting is from <a href="http://www.stamascus-knife-works.com">Stamascus"</a>. They've got a bunch of pictures of knives with Mike Norris and Eggerling damascus, both folding and fixed blade.

I'd also like Eggerling mosaic, but shouldn't I be concerned about corrosion resistance?

On bolsters? I wouldn't worry about it too much. That might be a concern with the blade, since moisture could get into the pivot area and cause rust, but the bolsters are exposed.

Is stainless damascus avail. with rose or raindrop pattern?

I know Devin Thomas makes stainless damascus in those patterns. Mike Norris makes a raindrop pattern. I'm not sure about a rose pattern.

Thanks again guys. Also, I had considered using only handle spacers rather than a true back spacer. What do you think about this?

What's a handle spacer?

Thanks Ryan...I'm getting a little closer to a decision...I've learned a lot from many of you already, so all this info. / opinions is doing me a lot of good.

What I meant by handle spacers...was something like Elishewitz uses on his folders. Kinda like the Apogee, or Sebenza.
