What Steel Is This China Buck?

I don't trust that the China Bucks that say they are 420hc are the same quality 420hc as the USA ones.
Do they have the "BOS flame".....?
I've always wanted a Selkirk, but can never bring myself to purchase it. I've come close, but even the sheath turns me off.

I don't care if they are giving away the new Chinese knives. I don't want anything to do with them.

LOL!

Me too.

Well, your catalog info might have been correct. I did more Googling and found posts from Rhino on one he got in 2005 that was 440C.

OR.........did he only think it was 440C and it could have been 420HC?

How CAN you be sure what steel you have at a time when they're changing steels without warning?

Here are his posts in these old threads.

And: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/mayo-cutback-12-88.455632/

Maybe Rhino will show up to share the history and his experience. I'd like to know if his Hilo was marked as a 2005 or was it an earlier manufacture?

I still think my 2005 sharpens like 420HC but there's really no way to tell what I have--Chinese 440C might not be like the old Buck 440C of years gone by.

Rhino?

I just saw this. I have no memory of writing that message and posting it, nor do I recall ever owning that model of knife! This is very odd. My memory is generally very good, but it's clearly my userid attached. Perhaps a database error? It's possible that I wrote it and just don't remember, but that would be unusual to say the least.

Regardless of the origin of the messages, I have no information to share regarding the context or details. I have no opinion on the knife as I do not believe I ever owned or even saw a Hilo in real life.

I also don't remember the the message in the link directly above, but reading through it I see that it looks very much like my writing. I am confident that I wrote it, but have no memory of it or the knife in question, so I have nothing meaningful to add to the conversation.

This is very weird!

Thanks for responding.

Maybe one of the Admins here can give us a possible explanation.

I'll report the post to them.

Ya better go check your collection. Ya might have some knives you’ve forgotten about . Surprise! Man this could be like getting a new knife all over again! 😆😂

i have done that myself with a laser level tool that I got for a gift some 15 years ago. It has been in storage for 10 years and probably boxed up for 2-3 before that. Last August my son helped me move all of my stored stuff to my current house and upon opening the boxes I found a like new laser level. I had been shopping for one a few days before so I was surprised and so excited I already had one. 😆😂😂 I guess that’s a benefit of getting older and forgetful. Sometimes an old thing forgotten is a new item to discover.

Since it’s gone and offshore made. Buck might not know either. I don’t think it was one they put in the record books.

The frame lock on both the 179 and smaller 174 locks up nice and tight. Easy one handed opening and closing.
Sharpens up as nice as any Buck that I have. Bought the first one in Abilene Tx when I got off out there years and years ago, without a knife. Soon after I added a second 179 and later a couple of 174s.. Were and still are, at times, my EDCs..
Next to a lockback, I trust these frame locks over most anything else, other than fixed blades. Never had one fold on me during use like I have had a couple of off brand liner lockers.

I consider these "sleepers" in the Buck knife world.

I have backed out the screws in the clip and reinstalled with a touch of red locktite, which I do with any knife with a clip. Those screws WILL sometimes back out.

Sharpens like 420HC?

And what year is your 179?

Apologize for not getting back to this thread.
I have a 179 and 174 laying here. Other two are probably hiding out in the truck or jeep or hunting or fishing bag. but these two are both China 2005's. I think the other two are probably 2006 or 2007...or...
Clammies are long gone so no other data, but probably 420.
I have used a Lansky clamp sharpener for a long long time and these sharpen up as nice as any 110 I have, whether 440, 425, 420, S30V, or that one Bass pro sold. maybe 15x something. Its awol right now as well. Need to inspect wifes back pack...lol

One thing I learned long, long ago, you have to put your edge on a new knife. That takes a bit longer initially.
But after that they tune up faster. No matter what sharpener you may be using, and as long as you consistently
use that one.

Its all about maintaining the same angle.

Babbling incoherently...

Oh yeah,,, The 179 had loose screws on the clip. I think it is a 1.2 mm to tighten them.. Tiny thing.
Shoulda gone after some red locktite.
