What steels stain and rust?

I am wondering what steels will stain and maybe rust and which ones will never rust or stain?

ATS-34?
154CM?
1095?

Or, in other words, which steels are the most resistant to stains and rust?

Are you able to use the search function?

The blades that are most resistant to rust are NOT steel. There are some specialized alloys (like H1) that are specially formulated to not rust.

Practically any blade steel can and will rust if exposed to the elements long enough.

That said, practically any blade steel in the hands of a responsible user, will not rust appreciably even on an extended and wet camping outing.

Edit to add. You are really off to a stellar track record for thread starting:foot:

Pretty much any of them can stain and /or rust if the conditions are right. 1095 is a carbon steel, i.e. it doesn't have free chromium in the alloy to fight corrosion. It will stain and/or rust quite easily. Simply cutting acidic fruit such as an appple will discolor 1095.

ATS-34 and 154CM are both "stainless steels", meaning they have a high chromium content (14%) which resists corrosion. They can still rust or stain, but they are much less likely to.

H-1 is a special alloy in which some of the carbon has been replaced with nitrogen. It takes a lot to corrode H-1 (like direct contact with chlorine tablets for several hours), and it is considered "rust-proof".

Do you see under my name where it says gold member? That means I can search. It has been so long since I have been a non paying I forgot if " registered users " can use the search. When you get defensive so quickly it makes it seem like you had an idea you should have searched first.

Thank you for the mature response yablanwitz. Of the several knife forums I have joined recently, Blade Forums, regrettably, seems to have the most rude, immature childish folks. Its a shame.

Once again making an ass out of yourself rycen. Sure this question has been answered a million times, but I assure you that your attitude isn't going to make you many friends.

If you look for the worst possible motivations, you will probably find them.

Silly me, I assumed the question merely sought information as an alternative to locating and posting link(s) to one (or more) of the hundreds of threads that have discussed corrosion-resistance over the years. But that's me.

Well, if you hang around here long enough, you'll realize there are only about 50 thread subjects, all repeating in random order. If you can't handle that, you should probably stay out of General Knife Discussion for the sake of your own sanity.

You really should read more and post less. Your introduction to BFC has been less than stellar. Those who live in glass houses....

Yep. If it's steel is will rust. It's just a matter of how prone to rust it is.
The H1 "steel" that spyderco uses is not actually Steel, it is technically a ceramic I believe.
