What the Buck is This??

OK thank you all for your help. I don't need to really do any sanding as the finish is silky soft after just thumbnailing it! The stuff came off completely with no stubborn residues which CONVINCES me it is a freak manufacturing fault.
I have contacted Buck to see if they will offer me replacement scales or a discounted offer on them (I pay post for example). I hope for a good outcome.

But this has in NO WAY puts me off Buck knives, far from it they are a genuine part of America  Again, thanks for all your help and comments.

I looked at you Photos and your knife has been exposed to moisture or a Chemical, did not leave the factory this way, I am sure Joe will take care of you.

Chemical vapour maybe as the varnish comes off so easily.
would have to be a lot of damp though as I suppose a hunting knife handle is reasonably well protected against blood, water etc. Rest of the knife shows no damage at all, nor the sheath.

I'm optimistic something will be sorted:)

Looks to me like something happened in the spray booth at the factory. Either the wood was not dry enough or some residue got on the wood before finish coat. I would take Wills advise and refinish it yourself. Lots of options with the finish, Lacquer, Polyurethane, Linseed, Butchers Wax, depending on what you want the feel to be. Personally I like the new Poly coats by Min-wax.

...Remembering what the nun taught young Goose in the broom closet...."keep your mouth shut and just go along for the ride"....

Removed the scales. The metal underneath is as shiny as the metal of the rest of the knife so it is defo new not used. Scales are smooth so I suppose I'll sand them a bit and apply some varnish.

It's just an annoying drag to have to spend time fiddling about on a brand new knife to get it right. It should not have slipped through the QC. Don't get this with Mcusta......

Excellent feel to the knife and lock-up etc.

Well here's some QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE. Mr Houser e-mailed to me and offered to send me replacement scales, this is excellence at its best. Many thanks to him and especially to all of you Buck devotees who have offered advice.

Now I want to get an Alpha Dorado in camo finish-such an excellent compact knife(I have the birchwood version) any suggestions where I can order it from? Alright, I'll leave E-Bay alone, I need a cutler who will sell to the EU takes Visa or Paypal and doesn't charge the earth for post&packing. Ideas?
