I'll check the centering and the action specially if it's a flipper . Then back to the box and they sit there until it's it turn to be EDC . Most of them just stay in the box .
I inspect for flaws - if there is an issue that is unacceptable to me (especially on the higher-priced knives), it goes right back in the box it came in and back to the post office. I'm kinda picky like that. But if it's perfect, and I love it, I order another one (or 10 - LOL!).
Open and close it a few times. Then inspect it for a tight lock up and centering. Then slice some copy to check the sharpness of the blade. Switch clip to tip up if necessary. Sharpen before I start to carry it often times.
After opening the packaging, I usually check centering and the general condition (any obvious blemishes/damage?), then open it a few times and check the operation and sharpness/ edge condition. If I haven't already in anticipation of receiving the new knife, I shuffle the collection around to see where it will fit in best. Then, if all is well, I grab a few other similar/complimentary other knives and line them all up on the desk while I read reviews of the knife I just bought. Then it gets carried for as long as I can force myself to carry any one knife. Weird ritual
