Back from the foggiest night ever spent in the outdoors. Rain, mist, food, cold, a snake and plenty of sausage. An all-around good time in the Eastern Woods!

The day was looking grim and rain was forecasted, which always means Jay wants to camp.

Thunderstorms throughout the day…

New Growth…

Time to establish camp before the rain…

But, we were too late…the rain monster came and made every attempt at fire useless!

The second time it stopped for a few minutes we went to work like two elves on Christmas Eve.

Scrapings from the spine…

Always look for the natural cracks in wood before splitting, it makes life easier.

Firesteel finish!

We went with the Siberian Fire-Lay, but done East Coast style. It provides cover from the rain and acts as a self-feeding fire because once the top fuel burns, it drops down into the main fire. Also, the top logs can be used to rest a pot for boiling water or for frying.

Top view.

Frying can be done or a large pot for melting snow or just boiling up water.

Quick brew…

Tools I took…

I don’t care for chopping much, but after hours of using a bow saw, I’d rather chop for a change. I cut one handle down to 12” for ease of carry and for light to medium chopping and light kindling splitting.

Polish bacon

Cleaning out peppers

Can anyone guess what’s on the menu?

Fog setting in…eerie to say the least!

Potatoes in the embers

Yes, kabobs and taters…with some bacon.

Fire and fog…

Fog, captured with flash!

Morning brush…

Mini ziplock with a single serving of toothpaste.

Morning boil and some brew

Hike out and beautiful weather!

Red newt - a salamander ,an interesting creature ,starts life in the water, then on land, then back in the water !

Black snake - our friend , eats lots of mice !! In NY state all snakes are protected !

super comfortable! my ground sleeping days is over now i think unless i'm forced to.

i need a few more nights to get things dialed-in especially with the underquilt but i was warm.

i had it hanging on the trekking pole inside the tarp - not very accurate...the low was maybe in the high 30's i'm guessing.

Love the picture of the red eft!!! Thanks a lot for sharing. And the picture of the post hike lunch makes me hungry just looking at it.

Always love you guys' trip pics! The food always looks delicious  (Though the title led me to believe some snake eating happened :D)

Bearthedog, Hard to tell from the photos but do you use "Drip Lines" when using a hammock? We used to take a length of 550 cord or tear off a piece of cloth and tie it to the support line of your hammock, just inside the end of the tarp, so rain running down the line would hit the Drip Line and fall to the ground, not continue down the line and you wake up in a wet hammock. John

thanks, guys! it's always a fun trip hanging out with reuben.

that was my shelter setup and yes i used drip lines including carabiners as a water break.

dutch bling indeed - 1,000 lbs breaking strength and less than an ounce for two.

the tarp forms a really nice seal as well.

Great shots for a good adventure ! Fog can really change a landscape! I really need to upgrade my camp cuisine, you are inspiring me :D. Thanks for sharing!

John,
It was Jay's hammy. I had the small yellow tarp.

Next time, we eat snake.

Awesome thread. As always.

Thank you sir.

Excellent photos from both of you

Thanks for sharing!!!!!

Glad you liked it Doc.

We've been accused of that before!

The fog was like having a third or fourth person in camp, bigger than life personality, really added to the trip.

Cool trip! Didn't know they had Lagunitas on the East Coast. I'm about 20 min away from them out here in Cali and I sharpen knives for one of their local drivers in exchange for ales lol.

Damn what a great post! I love the threads you guys do, the photos are always amazing. Hopefully BF doesn't glitch this time and actually lets me reply...

I love this thread for many reasons, but especially because I don't feel so weird about humping groceries out into the woods, then sitting out in the middle of nowhere slicing up vegetables and meats and cooking them over a fire just to smell the scents wafting on the air and eat well with a much better view than any restaurant :D

Jay what hammock & tarp system is that. Looks like the way I should go!!! More info if possible. Thx.

Nice trip as always guys
thanks, man! can't wait for another trip.

thanks! lagunitas is available here for awhile now...that's a sweet deal right there! i'd trade sharpening for beer as well.

thanks, brian! i love to cook but only thing holding me back from doing it more often outdoors is the extra cleanup required especially during the dry season...i tend to consume at least 4 liters of water on an overnighter and that's only with just two dehydrated meals with the rest no cook food

one of these days i'd like to go car camping and bring cast iron pots, bake bread, stew with fresh vegetables, and all that.

I was with ya up until this point. :barf:

OK, now we're back on track! :p

haha!
