What the heck is this knife for? Butter?

At some point the idea came for flatwear with no points so dinner guests wouldn't be poking each other at dinner due to an over indulgence of cocktails. Guest had to leave their own knives which everyone had and used to eat with on a daily, at something similar to a coat check but for pointy objects. I believe it was o w of the French king Louis some number or other who implemented this policy first at dinner social events he had! Not 100% sure, but like 90!!!

Stupid useless info that I read somewhere a long time ago!!
Finally used it though!!

At first I thought it was a ham carver (or some other carver/server) but then saw the blade length.

Yeah, I'm going with table knife.

Looks like most everything else they make is impractical or looks ridiculous so I guess that giant butter knife makes sense.

Steel is not so "weird" and just looks to be a table knife service item .

The only thing weird is that I didn't know this maker even did tableware .

Based on the monolithic structure and traditional design, it looks like it could even handle other spreadable condiments like jams, jellys, mustards(depending on heat treat), whips, and possibly cold peanut butter.

All sound plausible, but I and yes I didn't know they made this stuff either so which was part of my confusion.

What is strangest to me is that it's sold individually, if you're dinner parties are fancy enough to warrant these it seems like they'd sell it as a set or in a set.
I don't wholly get Atlantic Knives. Mixing in budget trash like El cheapo camping gear seems to detract from their...... O jeez I can't believe I am going to say this, but their " cache".

I guess if the flea market thing is working for them God Bless.

"Sheffield Type is completely in steel, characterized by a monolithic structure and by the traditional design of English knives that make it easy to integrate in to a classic cutlery service. For those that love the Sheffield style but also want an efficient blade. Available individually in a cardboard box, or in an ashwood box case of six."

I read the description and left even more confused. I guess the answer is "classic cutlery service." Sheffield, style.

EXACTLY!!!!that description is why I posted it.
Someone needs a new copy editor.

No idea what it's for, but the steel leads me to believe it has an edge...

I thought the unfortunate gigantic wording down the entire blade was the ridiculous part, but then I saw the price. :D

It's pretty cool though. Now I want to make some sandwich knives. o_O

N690 is not a weird steel. It’s perfectly fine. You can buy one individually, but if you read on through the listing you can also get a set of 6 in an ashwood box. It’s “cachet”, and yes it does.

Extrema freaking Ratio butter knife.:oops:

a prominent uk based dealer states...
"For those that love the Sheffield style but also want an efficient blade. The peculiar blade shape allows to cut food while only touching the dish with the blade-tip. If correctly used, this knife will retain its original edge for a very long time."...

guess some lucky tactical folks have just
way too much moolah to splurge an amount
of which could probably feed some "hand-to -mouth" 3rd world village for a month.
ahh the excesses...

For tactical butter of course. When you have to do blackened ops for MI6 infiltrating the upper crust of enemy society and jam up their evil plans, you NEED this "bread for war" weapon to butter them up and then crumb-le their evil plans, evildoers are toast for an operator with the Extrema Ratio butter knife.:DI liked how the website background is some soldier looking heroic, and the foreground....a $150 butter knife that has billboard, all caps font to make sure everyone knows that youre tactical enough to waste all that money. And the blueprint like specs area, comedy gold. This should be in the tactilol thread. :D

I appreciate the correction of cache to cachet, I know better... I was getting evil eyes from my kid for using the phone during family time lol.
As far as the N690, I wasn't taking consideration of the fact this isn't a Japanese or USA made knife, and looking at the pricing from Alpha (not crazy expensive), you are 100% right, and this isn't a particularly bizarre steel to use. I had no idea that it was that cheap for something close to VG-10.

Thanks for pointing both out to me.

Also, great point about the billboarding, for something supposed to be classy, but it sure is ugly. If this is used commercially in an expensive restaurant, it's tacky.

Pardon the low-brow humor, on a hunch did an image search for "vintage gynecological instruments" ... yikes! A lot more respect for our women folk after looking at the first page of results...
