i have some cts-xhp. i got it flat ground from the source. i profiled my blades and am now grinding the bevels. low and behold, there is a very straight and prominent line all the ay through the blade on both sides. its dead straight and is visible plain as day all the way across my bevels.

what is this line? and should i just scrap the blade now or keep going?

It's to help you line things up !!
Without knowing what it is I'd dump it.
Can you show us a good clear photo ?

That's weird. I've only ground one knife out of CTS-XHP (love it, btw), but I've never seen anything like that in any particle-metallurgy steel. I would call whoever you got it from.

it looks like 2 pieces were welded together. it feels like its the same steel on either side of the line. and the line is perfectly straight. i cant figure it out.

Can you see the line go across the end of the bar when it's ground clean? I really have no clue, just curious.

it goes straight through one end to the other. perfectly straight about 3/8ths from the edge of the plate.

Hi Peter, What your seeing is the remnants of the stainless can that encases the powder when welded up at the foundry. I've spoken to the people at carpenter and have told me their process has changed. They will be grinding off this can prior to sending the billet out for rolling. Of course this doesnt help the people thet have bout tons of this already....but at least its a problem they've recognized and are fixing it. All you can do is take off more material until its gone. I've had the same problem and decided to scrap my blades as they were much to thin for my needs after all the can was gone.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ah ha......you were as lucky as I was. You got a piece from the edge of the sheet too. That whole 1/4 to 3/8 " all along that piece is can (scrap).

Sorry this happened to you too. Its a real bummer after alot of work to find this.

Shawn

Well, I would certainly hope so! That stuff is pricy. Excellent steel though, as long as you don't get the dirty end of the stick, so to speak.

i spoke to the seller of the steel. they were aware of the can. but this particular piece was flat ground. they said the piece should have none left. but the edge thing blows. i scrapped 3 blades today.

Will they send you some replacement steel or are you sol?

Quit talking to the sales reps. I would ask to speak to the manager, the VP, or the owner/president of that company. They should replace the whole order, free, including shipping. I have never had a steel supplier say, "Sorry, tough luck."
If they balk, offer to send a blade for their inspection. It wouldn't hurt to mention this thread, but most companies have search filters to find such discussion, so they probably already know about it.

This is exactly my thoughts.

i agree on the replacement. its a mom and pop type store and i have alot of respect and love for them. im sure they will help me out.
they never refused any service, as i have not asked yet. most stores are closed today anyway.

but hey i got to practice some interesting grinds and no worse for wear......accept maybe 60$ or whatever....

Interesting explaination .But it's only good practice [for me ] to grind off all of the can before rolling. But then I'm only a hard nosed old metallurgist !

I think I know who you're talking about, and yes they will almost certainly get you squared away. Call them. :)
