What the hell is wrong with people?

Uncle Bill is correct, and I would speculate further that even five years down the road this won't mean anything.

As far as drinking goes, my Dad lectured me about it when I was your age and someday you will probably be counseling a younger fellow against it yourself. It is the natural tendency for many geezers to pound on that stump, but we are right.

It sounds like you want an M1 specifically, and since your Dad is in agreement you will have one if your interest maintains. I'll bet you have read about them for hours and will read many hours more. While you are at it, do an internet search for "slamfire" and see what comes up. This problem is real with the gun you have in mind, and happened to my Springfield Armory product. It can be avoided though, and if your search is unproductive contact (or better yet join) the NRA. They will be happy to advise and you should listen to what they have to say about slamfires before firing a single round through any gas operated military gun. Also, they will point you in the right direction for training and competition with that rifle.

It is unlikely that your school is any more paranoid about on-campus violence than any other school these days. The police and sheriff's depts. around here are spending most of their training budgets practicing how to interdict people shooting up schools. It is a huge concern and school administrators better act like they are concerned about it or they will be lynched by the parents.

As a free American, you have the right to say just about anything you want, but sometimes context must dictate one's choice of words. School is no place for discussion of the M1 these days, but that is the way it goes. Alot of jobs are the same way - certain topics are forbidden. When you get that M1, you will probably figure out there are a few things the "boys" don't want to hear about on the firing line either, but you will adjust.

As an aside:

Be very careful when buying used guns. Many of them, especially older guns like the M1, can be unsafe to fire. The same goes for ammunition; buy fresh factory ammo whenever possible. An improperly reloaded round can easily misfire or detonate.

If you must buy a used gun, then either let the owner demonstrate that it is in good operating condition, or take it to a competent gun smith to get it checked out. A large number of vintage M1 Garands were reimported into the US during the early 1980s under the Blue Sky Law. These guns are retired military pieces from around the world and should be inspected carefully before use. Look on the barrel (near the front) for a "Blue Sky Law" marking. Also, be aware that the barrels on these guns are often worn out. The rifling is gone near the front of the barrel so your shots will be wildly inaccurate.

I hope you get to return to your gun hobby soon. But, when you do, get plenty of training and make sure you do it safely.

I agree 100% with what Semp said a few posts back about not talking to the cops without a lawyer present, regardless what the cops tell you.

My lawyer publishes a little booklet that he passes out to all his clients that covers this in great detail.

But, by the time they read it, it's usually too late.

By the way, if you're 16 years old and listening to Sinatra, you're a lot worse off than any of us realize.

Hope everything works out OK, but listen to to the guys about having a laywer present. The police (haven't gotten to detectives myself) sometimes operate in a system as screwed up as the one the teachers you've complained about do. (maybe high school is good training for modern life after all--very scarey!!)

By the way, if you're 16 years old and listening to Sinatra, you're a lot worse off than any of us realize.

:D :D

Ben, how 'bout sharing some of your musical recommendations? The original Wren and Stimpy are among my favorite cartoons.

Hey, but what would I know - everyone reckons we Australians are a weird mob...

Maybe that's why I felt more at home in WA than the country of my birth. People tell me I am a little eccentric as well.

Boy, I miss VB and chicken Twisties, cherry ripes and vegemite. Morris Port at 13 bucks a box. Blue water and gum trees... Surfing... Lazy summer saturdays watching the bowlers... The Fremantle Doctor... Saltwater swimming pools and two channels on TV... Most of all, I miss the unending hospitality of the total strangers who became my mates... <sigh> :)

There are times where I still feel I am more Aussie than Canuck. It's hard when your heart is 16,000 km away.

I am genuinely homesick.:( I want my red dirt and my ute back!

Man, I was looking at that teacher's band website and got disgusted. IMO, hardcore ruined punk :)
The Ramones are mostly RIP. I'm glad their music lives on. Thank goodness The Dictators are still playing. I saw them at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick a little ways back and they still rock the house.
