What The Walking Dead has taught me

Is anyone else watching the Walking Dead on AMC? Their other shows are phenomenal, so I have been watching the series from the beginning. No, I do not think the zombie apocalypse is coming, but that series literally hit close to home.

The series is filmed in metro Atlanta, my home since 1998. I recognize most of the landscape in the outdoor scenes, but the quarry was new to me. I thought it must have been in some remote area in rural Georgia, so I started investigating its actual location. Lo and behold, it is located right next to downtown Atlanta. That area is kind of a sketchy part of town (getting better), but I lived about a mile away for seven years. I worked 1/2 mile away for two years. I went to school a mile away for five years (yeah yeah, I took a year off). I rode my bike by that place probably a thousand times and drove by it every weekday on the way to work at a couple of different jobs for a few years.

Atlanta is in the process of turning the quarry into the city's largest park. I don't know if it is public yet, but that looks like a really cool place to check out. The metro area has a surprising amount of parks tucked away that I only started discovering when Google maps became close to what it is today.

My point is that I had absolutely no idea that it was there, even though I was right next to it for many years. When I lived and worked in the area, my friends and I actively explored the city around us on bike and on foot, regardless of whether or not we were allowed to be in the area, and we completely missed it.

What other outdoor areas am I missing? What are you missing?

I like the show as well. I like the survival aspect of the show and it seems like it would be close to reality minus the zombies. AMC does make some of the best.

I love the show. Ive been a fan of the graphic novels for awhile now too. Really cool that they turned it into a series.

i am loving the show so far too... they're doing a great job following the graphic novels, as well as adding some little extra's in there too..

There are a couple of quarries around here as well, just up the road in NC. The first time I was shown one, it was about only a couple of miles from my home and still actively being mined. Talk about one gigantic hole in the ground! There was a drive up overlook and those gigantic dump trucks looked tiny in the distance. It was over a 1/2 mile across and just like you, I thought, "How did I not know this was here?" I too have driven past it uncountable times. Definitely a surprise.

I see movie/TV shoot locations all the time that I recognize. We off-road in both the Mojave (high desert) and Colorado (low desert), and will often scout out locations that we have seen. Great fun....

Jeez... All I learned is that I need to stockpile more ammo :p
OH ! and to stay out of Atlanta !

Really is a very solid and entertaining show.

Over the last year I've put more effort into finding local day hike locations and have been surprised how many have turned up. Being in the middle of a fairly densely populated area I didn't expect to find this much land put aside for recreation. These areas are often located around or near good sized raw water storage reservoirs. Pays to look around...important to know where our local resources are.

cool show just started watching only seen 4 shows now just wondering how there gonna get along with the new gangstas they just met

I love the show thus far. Only problem I have with it is I will be missing the last episode.

Definitely glad I have ammo stockpiling though ;)

I thought the show was a series of training vids for the zombie apocalypse ;). Unfortunately, I do not have cable, and so far, friends and family only have DVR recorders, no DVD recorders. So, it's going to be Hulu or wait until the series comes out on DVD. My ancient computer can't handle a full episode.

There are lots of spots just in my neighborhood that I would like to explore, that I had no idea existed, through, you guessed it, the awesomeness :foot: :D of Google maps.

Paulding Forest has a couple old gold/copper mines! (Next county over to your west.)

I was wondering where the quarry was. Who would of thought it was so near downtown Atl. Read the graphic novels. I'm up to book 6 out of the current 12 volumes.

Who could resist Zombies, guns and women? I downloaded ep 1 and 2 on Itunes and taped the next 2 can't wait till the next one.
