Have been looking at this forum for ever, and would like to get my feet wet. But not sure what is a BEST FIRST Kurki?

Length, Weight, and I am a Southpaw so I would like a Lefty Sheath

You have to give information in order to get information.

1. How big are you? How fit are you?

2. How do you plan to use your khukuri? Heavy chopping? Self defense? Hiking, camping, backpacking? There's no one "best" khukuri for everyone or for all purposes.

3. If your answer to 2 is "all of the above" I would recommend a KLVUK. It's less expensive than other comparably sized models and can serve most purposes. A good "first khukuri."

The frog on a standard scabbard can be removed and reversed for a lefty; it just doesn't look as good. Alternatively, you can buy a khukuri and send it to one of the fine leatherworkers on this forum to get a custom lefty scabbard. If you have the right skills you can make your own.

Davidf99 covered most of the questions, so I'll just make a recommendation. If you are looking for a general purpose, all-around khukri, I recommend the 16.5" WWII and BAS. I Think the average weight of both is 24oz. My WWII is 21oz. It doesn't hit as hard as my 18", 28oz WWII, but do to the lower weight, I tend to carry it a lot more.

My recommendation is that if you aren't looking for anything very specific, watch for periodic Deals of the Day, and grab one that catches your fancy aesthetically and budget wise. I don't believe you need to watch out for craftsmanship; QC is pretty consistent to my knowledge, and blemishes are noted as such in their description.

If you do have a purpose in mind, the replies above, site descriptions, and various review threads in the forum should serve you well.

I will second the advice to buy a blemish first. They are outstanding values and will give you an idea of what you want next... Something a different size or weight perhaps. But this way you are paying, like, $80 for a $200 blade simply because the horn (or wood) handle has a tiny, cosmetic, crack.

Demon has a good point. My first 3 Khukri's were Blems. 2 were used the other was new. They offer Good value for money.

My vote also go for the klvuk.

I also agree on blems with cosmetic issues. Some has tremendous value.

KLVUK, all the way. The only downside is that they'll do pretty much anything, so justifying another can be difficult.
Picking a DOTD that strikes you is a lot of fun though.

The klvuk really is a fantastic value. Tough to beat for the price, and priced to be used hard. It has shelved a lot of my go-to khuk because it just works so well. My biggest problem is picking with of the two klvuks to use.

That said, I think a 15" AK with wood handle is a great starter khuk. Tough, sized to good work, won't pull your pants down, and gorgeous. As a matter of fact, it might me my next purchase. I don't have a standard AK anymore since I gifted my last one away:)

ibid on the KLVUK. Might not have to wait to long for one in fact Aunti Y might have one in stock for good price now. Email her to find out. There are also great leatherbenders here that could make you a fine sheath for it since it dont come with one. That would be a great starter package for sure.

There was one with a sheath for sale a few days ago. If he's lucky there will be another one :o I'm shattered I bought my KLVUK sheathless, then see one on dotd with a sheath, jus my luck aye haha

Can't go wrong with a KLVUK for your 1st kukri that was my 1st Kuk and I just bought my 2nd no to long ago and already planning on a 3rd just waiting for the money and the right dod to come around at the right time!!!!

The KLVUK is a great starter. But I'm going to echo steely_gunz on the 15" AK. The double fullers on an AK are just gorgeous, they feel great in the hand, and you get a chakma to maintain the blade.

Is it edge geometry that makes the KLVUK a great knife vs other Khukuri's?

I really think it is just the price and the readiness of the blade--- Klvuk comes with no frills, just a working blade-- you dont feel bad about messing up any nice finish :D
