should i just get it sharpend at the gun show or should i do it myself? i might regret that question.:D

what should i use? i have no knowledge on the subject. i've always had cheap knives and got them sharpened at the gun show. somebody here said "if you can't sharpen it you shouldn't own it". i'd like to keep my 710 as i like it alot!;)

i searched first, came up with "how" and not much "with what".

thanks for the help.:p

Take a serious look at getting a Spyderco Sharpmaker (click the link and scroll down the page about halfway). Mine came via UPS today and I just watched the instructional video. Looks like a snap to use. Hopefully some knife freaks will stop in and tell us about it. :D

Cheers.

just looked at it, not much description. i need something to guide the angle of the sharpening. not to good with "fine touch".:(

I'm certainly not an expert with this setup yet, having just watched the video and sharpened only one knife so far (while watching the tape). That said, keeping the correct angle with the Sharpmaker is really quite simple. The sharpening rods fit into the base a pre-determined angles and the user simply sweeps the knife (heel to tip) down the stone while holding it straight up and down. I'm kind of concerned about fooling around with the chisel grind on my Emerson just yet. I'll wait a while to do that, but this kitchen knife is sharp.

Here's a link to a better description of the Sharpmaker. Regards.

Tom, the Spyderco Sharpmaker M204 comes with a great video that explains how to use the "system" to sharpen anything, especially knives. The way it is designed, you don't need a fine touch. The system is designed around motor skills we all naturally have. There is also a thick instruction booklet that seems daunting at first but then you watch the video and it all makes sense. The guy on the video knows a lot about knife sharpening and, for the most part, explains it very well. Sheesh, there's even a cute girl in the video. They had me shaving my arms before the video was over (and that was with some old "Faberware" steak knives!).

Just got done with a few sharpening tasks. I must say, this is one impressive sharpener. I've been sticking with to kitchenware for now, most of it REALLY needs to be sharpened anyways and it wouldn't be a great loss if I was to mess something up. So far a couple of paring knives and a big butcher knife have been taken to surgical status. :)

I even sharpened a potato peeler!

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is by far the best choice, especially when it comes to recurved blades like the 710.

I like the razor edge guides and my DMT hones.
I have not tried the others sharpening systems listed above, but the razor edge system works great for me so I have no need to try anything else.
I don't sharpen anything fancy. Just some work blades, kitchen knives and a old fishing knife once in awhile.

edit: is it ok to post the linky :)

I think 8 out of 10 people on these forums are gonna tell you to get the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have the 204 myself and find that it works really well. I use it mainly on my AFCK and my Endura.

Also works great on my Global G5...

tom poe: no offense, but looking at pass threads, you should know for sure that 99.99999999% of the votes from the forumites are for the spyderco sharpmaker ;)

Just a little practice on the Sharpmaker and you will be an expert. It's very easy to use.

BTW, the guy on the video is Sal Glesser, founder and President of Spyderco.;)

I also agree the for recurved blades, the Sharpmaker is the right answer. Get the diamond sleeves for the Sharpmaker if you're willing to spend the money, because they'll make your life much easier!

pahl, I absolutely love the Razor Edge guides, but they don't work well for recurved blades. For a recurved blade, you want to sharpen using a stone that's much smaller than the diameter of the recurve -- I spend most of my time on the sharp points of the spyderco triangle sticks, for recurved blades. A benchstone with a razor edge guide just doesn't work for this application.

wirebender, you are correct sir! you guys are nuts.:D

i'll have to be an outcast though. since i have my bm for edc, i can't bring myself to buy another knife.

If he can't bring himself to buy another knife, that's just because he didn't buy a Spyderco in the first place. ;) I did and haven't been able to stop since :D

p.s. the Spyderco Sharpmaker works great on them too!!
