what to buy to sharpen my BM 710

no, it took me no more than 2 weeks to realize i need an emerson mach I and commander! you guys are a bad influence.

i got the sharpmaker, i just used it on one knife. didn't exactly get a razor edge, it's sharp but not razor. guess i need to practice. if anyone wants to offer advice feel free.

You're hooked now Tom. You started exactly as I did; bought a BM710 and loved it. Then I got an Emerson Raven and wasn't as thrilled but by then I was addicted. Now I carry a large sebenza or an Al Mar SERE 2000 everyday. Also buying Busses, butterflys, customs and commissioning customs. Get out while you can!

with my budget i won't be able to overdo it. gotta retire sometime though.

my only problem is i can't find any '02 commanders!

I think those '02 commanders are in high demand. I know they changed the recurve on the blade somewhat. Also the titanium liners and the stop pin were slightly modified I believe.

I've been waiting for mine well over a month now. It's driving me nuts.

I vote for the Sharpmaker as well... it's especially nice for recurved knives like the 710.
Never had anything but good results with my Sharpmaker (though I don't own a BM 710).

"02 Commander"??? You mean there's a knife for sale I haven't heard about? Please fill me in.

yes the '02 commander has been slightly redesigned. they added more grooves on top of the handle near the blade, where your pinky finger would be, a bigger stop pin and slightly more of the blade extends in the handle(whatever that means). i also heard they changed the recurve slightly but couldn't say as it was from another member. the other info i got straight from emerson.

For both my 710 and my Emerson Commander I simply sharpen them by "hand" using a Jewelstik 1-2-3. This is the very best sharpener I have found. Perfect for recurve blades. It literally is a diamond sharpening rod with 3 grades, fine, medium, coarse. All on one rod. Take a look. It is really great.

Here is the web site: http://www.jewelstik.com/HTML/jsknifesharpener.html
