What to call this...

Ok, chopping a few invasive vines in the common area behind our house with one of my Busses. Wifey asks me to chop this big (1" thick) root of one mother of a Honey Suckle vine that was attempting to kill a 40' Pine and another 20' Pear tree...

Whack at it a few times and wallah, damage from a small quarze stone in the ground next to the root that I didn't see. Ugh, all my fault. :(

So, I was wondering what this is called. A chip? A dent? A roll? There are two areas that were impacted. My assumption is the the one closer to the tip is a series of rolls whereas the lower one is a dent. Opinions? Just not sure what to call this nor the best plan of action to bring the edge back. TIA!

I had about the same thing happen to a FSH. I steeled it back to shape, but had to reprofile with sandpaper and diamond plate. With a bit of elbow grease and a few odd hours work it was back in business.

I'd call it an owie !

Get a smooth steel, or something similar (I've used a screw driver shaft) and push the metal back towards the edge to re-align (recover) as much steel as you can.

after that just sharpen her up.

The one near the tip should push back, the other, you may have to sharpen out over time.

I had pretty good luck with an AK I did the same to.

but then there's my SH-E

They all look like rolls to me. The ones closer to the edge shouldn't be as hard to fix as the big one in the rear. I almost thought that was a big (comparatively speaking) dent but your last photo seems to maybe show the metal rolled over onto the logo side of the edge.

which brings up a good question...

once you have a roll and push it straight again, does that area become more cosmetic than functional?

i mean, it must loose integrate while being deformed and realigned.

i would think in my situation of being in constant danger and surrounded by broken glass and smuched beer cans that i would just prefer to resharpen the whole damned thing.

right?

It looks like a roll that was then sheared off... By the rock, I'm assuming... That must've been some blow! How's the rock??

roll and a mash.

the rolled part is where the edge was abruptly pushed to one side.
the mashed part is where the edge was pushed straight in, mushrooming out on both sides.

Rock was not visibly damaged believe it or not... I really didn't think I was swinging it hard either. I checked out the larger ding and it doesn't look like much if any material rolled at all. Looks like a small piece of metal is either gone, or mushed in (didn't notice any mushrooming either).

The reflection in the last pic is of the mushed or chipped surface. Not any bulging from "moved" metal.

I'm having a hard time forming the word... Ch:foot: ...But it seems that this is what it is... The first I think I've seen. Do you have a lupe or a magnifying glass?? Maybe if ya got a closer look...? I have had a roll that was sheared off and it looked similar but smaller, but I had to examine the area inside the uhhh, errr, 'missing chunk' to see if there was evidence of metal pushed aside, which there was..

I have absolutely no idea how I could take a pic with a magnifying glass, but I'll see what I can do. Don't have a Macro/Micro lense for my SLR yet (Maybe Santa could help if I stopped investing in INFI ).

I got my brother one of those Dumpster Mutt's with the Busse Basic handle last year and he still hasn't used it yet. I need to "borrow" it, lol. That thing is like a sharpened railroad spike, awesome!

Phil,

Send her my way. I can fix her up for ya real quick.
