What to do (counterfeit issues)

Well, I just found out that a commander that I traded my Specwar model A for is a counterfeit.

To say that I'm pissed about it is like describing the Atlantic as "a little damp".

Does EKI have any legal measures against these guys that sell them as the real thing? (I'm planning on hunting them down and getting their contact info. They run a huge knife booth at the gun shows around here, plus they are charging sales tax on them, so I'm sure that they have a tax ID number as well)

Dammit! I got it as a replacement for the one that I lost 5 years ago, on a good note that was the same night that I met my now wife.

eki does have legal recourse, but it may not be financially viable.

what indicates your knife is a fake? there have been some variations of screw placement, screw type, logo, etc, over the years.

Well I only had this for a couple of months and carried it on and off, already the finish is wearing off from the blade, pivot and the clip. All of the hardware screws (the least the ones holding on the clip and the scales are torx drive) The thumbdisk is mounted slightly off, logo is off kilter. And the real big plus is that it looks EXACTLY like the fake one featured in the article on his site.

I don't care if it is financially viable when it comes down to things. I don't want anybody else to get ripped off either.

Oh man, sorry to hear that and no offense, but how were the screws not a dead giveaway?

I hope you're able to find the bastards.

Well, my old one was made in 98. And I think that the Specwar was a little older than that, and I really didn't want another one until now so I figured that he switched up hardware over the years. Looks like I was defiantly a "mark" when it came down to this.

not financially viable for you, but for eki. im sure they dont want anyone getting ripped off either, but civil suits can be costly.

sucks about that knife, it looks like a real good copy except for the torx screws.

I can understand why you're so pissed off.

By the way, I LOL'd @ your Atlantic ocean comment.

Yeah, but usually a cease and desist order, or hell a phone call saying "knock it off dickweed" would probably work. The other thing was they were selling them damn near at the MSRP of the ones off of the official site.

perhaps send the pics and/or knife to eki, along with the seller info. if its from overseas, the best we may be able to do is publish the info so everyone avoids them.

That's why I'm hanging on to it. As soon as I get the seller info, and if they refuse to make things right it goes out. And even if they do make it right the seller info will go out.

I'm thinking about doing a passaround with this knife so everybody can look at it, handle it ect so they don't get screwed either.

+1

Send everything you know to Emerson so they have as much knowledge of the who, when, where, whats as possible.

Is telling who the offending trader is allowed so others don't get homered too allowed?

Yes, this is what the GB&U forum is for and to an extent part of what this sub forum is for too.

:)

Damn, sorry to hear about that :grumpy:

The Commander is my favorite Emerson knife, and I would be pretty PO'd too if that happened to me. It's pretty crappy for someone to sell a counterfeit copy for full retail and be able to go home and sleep at night. I hope you get their info and post it here when you do.

Best of luck, J.

I hate knockoffs! Pisses me off when i find a knife for a price that seems unreal and then i later find out that its a clone of some sort. Happened to me quite a few times. Theres a copy of the Kershaw Chive that i bought that wasnt a chive at all.... This of course was before i met you guys at the forum.. I just thought it was a great deal... it was like 15 bucks for it too.... Theres also a really insanely close copy of the KABAR Warthog Fixed blade with the kraton handle.

Man I feel your pain.
You traded another Emerson for this fake?
Just FYI, Emerson never uses torx fasteners, so that should have been a dead give away.
After viewing your photos I might recommend you invest in an eye examination by a licensed optometrist before spending any more money on knives. One of us needs our prescription updated.
Good luck.

I think the only folders where different screws have been used in the past were some CQC-12's.

never say never the CQC12 uses torx, HD7 too IIRC.

thats a fairly good fake so i can see a mistake, if ya dont know your EKI's.

as far as EKI doing anything the makers are probablly in china so not a lot they can do imho.

There is a gun show this weekend that I'm going to hit, where I think that the dealer will be at. They aren't on bladeforums as far as I know of, but I will find out too.

And I'll be sure to recap what goes on at the show on the forum. Kind of makes me wonder what other counterfeits are being sold at their table.
