Hey guys, I have about a 2 ft bar of 1084 left over from my very first steel purchase years ago. Yes I was gonna make super strong chopping knives from them until I ran into the problem that only files/inexperience/unfit forge will give you. I still have the two foot long knife shaped objects sitting around that I will eventually finish when I get bored enough, but Im wondering what should I do with the rest of the bar? I thought about giving it away to some new members but realized 1/4 is not the steel to start out with even if they appreciated the gift. (ask me how I know). should I make some file guides?? Maybe a giant chopper now that I understand a little more about geometry and such?

Silly question I know but still could use some suggestions.

If you're not set up to heat 'n' beat it, and you can't think of anything else, then I'd be up for buying it off you. I can heat 'n' beat it and would love to have it. It's up to you though.

You don't have to make one 2' long knife. You could get 3 knives out of that bar if you're doing stock removal, maybe 6 if you're forging. If you are not sure of the heat treatment, send them out. If you don't really need or want that bar then donating it to someone who could really use it is a nice thought. Helping others is good karma.

Take it to a fellow smith's shop and have him help you beat it into a simple sword. Take it home and finish the filing and sanding. He might be able to help with the HT, too.

does anyone maybe have some 1/8 to trade for it?

(sorry if this the wrong area to post this in.)

Redd, Broom, Travis - I am being tolerant, but this is Shop Talk...not the local trader paper.

Fellow forumites -
Notice how the replies offering to buy/trade are from registered users?
Notice how they are almost always the ones who fail to read and follow the rules?

If you registered users would get a paid membership, you could email and PM each other about this. Just one more reason to become a member of the group and not stand on the sidelines. Seriously, isn't the best knife advice source in the world worth a few bucks a month???????

Any more trade/sales talk and this thread will get closed.

Sorry about that Stacy. I usually do try to stick by the rules, I don't talk about selling knives, I try not to talk about buying or selling period. This was just a lapse in judgement trying to help the OP.

I really want to be a paid member, but I don't ever have the funds that aren't spoken for by other things. If I could pay for a membership monthly then I'd be able to get one, it's just the lump sum, up front price I can't swing.

No problem. I was using this situation to make a point. Actually, you three are normally fine. This was a very minor situation, and is closer to fellows helping each other out.

What I suggest in a circumstance like this is making a post something like, "I have some 1/8" 1080 I'm not using...send me an email abc@def.ghi". Then make all arrangements off forum.
