What to do with a bad knife?

Let's say you're in possession of oh, a really bad chinese-made Smith&Wesson folder. The 10 dollar kind, with a spring steel lock that doesn't engage half the time. Dangerous, yes, and an embarassment to the collection.

Should the knife be:
1- Destroyed?
2- Given away?

It's worthless to me. Don't want someone to get hurt with a substandard knife, but say there's a collector of S&W stuff out there that would enjoy it for what it is.

What say you?

Don't you have an enemy to give it to? :D

No jury will ever convict you of cutting off his fingers....

If your inclined to modify your knives, use it as a test mule before you touch your good steel. If you're not going to use it for anything, make it so nobody can hurt themselves with it and chuck it. I'd say give it to a friend, but they (or someone they know) might get the inclination that it is a usable tool and hurt themselves.

Did you get it as a gift? (Silly question - as if you'd go out and buy one! lol) If so, tuck it away in a special place where you can remember it, and then take it out and leave it laying around whenever the person who gave it to you comes by. Then hide it away again after they've left! :D

Unless you've already got extra knives, I'd stick it in a tacle box, or a tool box, or someplace like that. You'll probably always have a knife in your pocket, but it never hurts to have an extra just in case. It may be a crappy knife, but it will still cut if you're desperate enough.

never heard of a s&w collector, not that they are not out there. i would use it as a 'throw away', that is like another mentioned, tackle/tool box, and when you need to pry something, use the s&w, break it, then throw it away.:D

I would remove the scales and stick it in a can with some 1084 powder once welded I would accordion it to reveal new knife. But I like to forge stuff into billets that don't work as anything else.

I found out the problem of having a cheap knock-off knife in your collection only too well yesterday. I have an microtech knock-off automatic....and I keep my knives sharp as hell...so you can guess where this is going. I was holding the knife and getting something else out of the showcase where I keep my knives...I don't even know how I hit the button...(of course...no safety on this thing) but the knife opened up swiftly and with great force into my unsuspecting left hand. Six hours later, after spending my Sunday in the ER...I had 6 new stitches and a very sore left hand. What to do with this knife??? I don't know...I hate to throw it out...and I hate to trade it to someone else...it is very dangerous and not safe to carry (thank god it wasn't in my pants pocket...eeeek). Just goes to show you...don't buy a cheap knife...ever.

1.) Wipe all your prints off it, and clean any fibers or hairs out of the handle.

2.) Put it in a Ziplock bag and stow it in the trunk of your car.

3.) If you're ever burgled, robbed, mugged, or assaulted -- then realize that you used lethal force on an unarmed man -- you can give HIM your crappy knife.
