What to do with a counterfeit knife?

I recently bought a fake Case knife. It took me a while to realize it, I'm afraid. I'm past feeling stupid and I am not angry anymore - I look at it as a valuable learning experience. But I don't think I want to keep the thing around. It is a poor specimen, proud backspring in all positions, blade rubs the liner, just an ugly battered fake.

Do I toss the thing in the trash? I hate to think of this knife returning into circulation.

Your thoughts?

If this has been discussed before (it must have been), I'd happily click around; the search didn't help much.

Your dumb friend,

Owen

I am guessing you can keep using it. It really depend if you still use it. If not then toss it to the scarp yard.

Toss it in the recycler. If you fear someone finding & using it, bend the blade before you toss it.

Practice sharpening with it? Turn it into some kind of project. Have fun with it!

SAFELY push it to its limits. See how much it takes to break it.
Then post the video on here. :D

Personally, I love testing my junk knives that I find.
Sometimes I am surprised at what the play-ridden plastic knives can handle.

Every art museum has fakes that they bought. I collect art and have bought a fake or two. Valuable learning experience. I never buy art or knives on ebay or craigslist. Just too risky.

Unfortunately, that could be describing a genuine Case. How do you know it's a fake?

show us a picture of it please. I have never seen or heard of a fake case knife before. it could be just a bad case knife that you need to return to get a new one from them.

How do you know its a fake, and do you have pics ?

I've never heard of a fake Case.

do what i did with my phony ka-bar, chuck it in your tackle box and use it for a beater fishing knife

It's a faked 1965-69 era grand dad barlow. The letters on the tang are cold-stamped. The U.S.A. underneath are mixed sizes of fonts. While I don't have a Case knife of that period exactly, I have a legit 1971 Case pen knife that has crisp stamps and is an altogether more solid build.

Also the rivets at the joint are sloppy and uneven.

I'd add pics but that would belong more in the BRL subforum.

I suspect that my fake is an 80s case Barlow with the tang marks ground off and restamped. The entire knife blade may have been replaced.

Yep, the older Case knives were made very, very well made as you know.

If its safe I would gift it to someone you know that may be in need of a knife.
Or you could throw in a kitchen drawer for anyone to use. I keep a couple of cheaper knives in mine and if someone around here ask to borrow my knife I tell them to get one out of the drawer.

It sounds like you dislike the knife so it would be best to deface it as an act of defiance to the counterfeit maker, then destroy it in a spectacular manner. Also, make sure to document the entire process. Share your results when you've finished.

I like the idea of keeping it around as a loaner. I think I'll drop it in the junk drawer at the break room of my workplace. They are a weapon-y people so it won't raise eyebrows. And when they ask to borrow my knife, I won't have to hand over my beloved.

Throw it in your vehicle, then when some one asks "hey do you have a knife? " you can say yes I do and give it to them.
