What to do with a new knife?

I look at it, play with it, use it. Then I look at it, smooth off any rough edges or manufacturing marks, make the handle fit my hand, make the looks fit my eye, sharpen it until it cuts the way I want it to, then carry it and use it.
Of course some get more mods than others, some get carried and used more. It's all about enjoyment. My knives are a hobby and a collection as well as tools.
