What to do with Arctic White coating?

Hey all,

I've got a nice HR with Tigerhide Magnum grips that I love. Its been modded a little with the coating removed around the tang and a pointy skull crusher on the end. I like everything about the knife but I just can't stand the white coating. I've been to the point of selling it a few times but it just never sold for what I wanted. I looked into having it custom coated but I thought the price was too high. I guess I'm just being cheap but I already have my grail knife (FSH) that cost me about $500 and by the time I pay for the custom coat and shipping I'm pushing ~$450+ on this one. I bought a can of stripper but before I go that direction I'm asking for help. What else can I do? Can I cover the white some way? I was even thinking about having it airbrushed over the white with a camo pattern.

Here is a pic, it is still unused until I figure out what I'm doing with it:

P.S. This is not a sale thread. At this point I want to keep the knife, just without the white coating.

Are you planning to use it, or put it in a safe because it looks cool?

If you're planning to use it, strip the paint, rub it with some sandpaper, and beat the hell out of it.

If you're keeping it because it looks pretty, then do something else with the paint.

You could always strip it- or you could send it in to the shop and have it recoated in a different color. That would probably cost you, though, I'm not sure how much. If you remove the scales, you could strip and recoat the thing yourself with something like KG Gunkoat, but then you'd have to figure out how to reattach the scales.

You could also see if someone were willing to trade you for something in a different color.

I've read that you don't want to have it recoated or to strip it, but I would still lean towards stripping it. It will have more of a user feel and you can take it to any finish level you want yourself.

Well, since its been modified there isn't as much of a reason to keep it in a safe - I think any collector value is limited. I like the style and length but most importantly, it fits my hand well. I'm not interested in removing the scales myself, I would just leave the coating on under the scales if possible. If I strip it I'd want a "DC" type non-glare surface, definitely not a mirror finish for this one. I'd have to figure out how to get that finish.

If you can find a local shop with a bead blasting setup, like an auto body place, you can probably get them to bead blast the blade for 20 or 30 bucks.

agreed or you can use it to decapitate zombie snowmen!

WOLVERINES ATTACK!!!!!!!!!

This won't add a lot to the discussion, because you've stated that you really dislike arctic white, but it's one of my favorite color coatings (particularly with black G10). I own several Busses in that color combo.

Have you actually checked with Busse to see how much they would charge you to change the coating? I"m sure it can't be that much. never have seen a HR with those Tiger hide handles. My favorite blade color is Jungle Green, but with that tiger hide handle... maybe sage or Bama clay?
If you don't want to put more$ into it, just strip it. I've done a HOFSH, FFBM and a BATAC, and they feel really good with a smoothness on the spine. just takes a lot of hand sanding if you don't have a professional machine.

You might try putting it up in the Trade forum to get a color you want, or sell it and buy the knife you want.

I would call Amy and ask her if you can send it in and how much it would be. :)

What kinda color for a knife is white? Send it back for a real color, like black!

Well, there has been some snow here lately so I guess it is technically "camo" right now. Still, I think black would be the best solid color although some variation of camo (not snow camo) would be my preference. I'll call the shop and find out how much a color change would be. I may have access to a sand blaster but I have very little experience (about 2 minutes) using one so that's probably not a good idea for me to attempt that. I'll see what Busse says first before I explore other options.

I am sure that they will take of you, remember they are the best. :D

I inquired over the summer re a battle mistress - they quoted me $60 for recoating and $14.95 for return shipping...

I'm guessing it might be less for the HR?

A hellova deal to me if you love everything else about your HR...

I finally have a tan handled nmsfno on the way and after it gets a good workout it might get sent to the spa for the M.M.S. treatment...

thats the MUSTARD MAN SPECIAL!!!

:D:D:D

Use it:thumbup: The coating will wear off overtime. And after one day of use it isn't white anymore so...

After plenty of use you can always send it to the Spa and ask for a finish you want/like. It'll be like new again. This way you'll get more pleasure/use out of that nice HR.

+1 bead blast locally for $20-$30. Call machine shops and auto body shops.

Send it to me, you won't have to look at her ever again! Ghetto satin that baby and use it HARD!
