What to do with Gift knives?

I am with revdevil on this one. I appreciate the gifts that I am given and use them every time. how, you ask? my family has learned the that best thing to give me is money becuase they don't know what the heck a propane hose and regulator kit is for, but they know I want one and I know where to get it. the cash shows up with a chocolate bar and they get the biggest smiles i give all year. the exception to this in the last few years has been that this year I am expecting an uncle to give me some wood. he has a ton of wood and doesn't have much use for purple heart, zebrawood, or really nice curly maple, so he gives them to me. Aw shucks. I have been given knives before, and it ended up being used as sharpening practice. little bugger got really sharp, too.
Tl;dr I have trained my family well.

This might sound strange to some but, I was raised to be grateful for gifts. I don't expect a Sebenza from someone that has no clue what the difference between a good knife and a bad one is. In my eyes, it's the thought that the person went out of their way, was thinking about me and was kind enough to give me a knife that counts more than the knife itself. I buy my own knives, guns, etc. And I don't get a kick out of making people feel foolish for their generosity. Gratitude is a hard thing to come by these days.

I will try and steer people in the direction of Buck, Spyderco, Kershaw, etc. if they are thinking of a bare bones economy knife.

You are either a senior citizen who remembers when people had good manners, or had parents who raised you right. Kudos!

idea #1-
regrind them and have fun trying to make a new blade grind you were curious about or always though "might be cool"

idea#2
sounds like dicks sporting good retails those, so maybe return for store credit and grab a lmf 2 fixed, or a gerber dmf (<nicest opening folder i have ever touched, not the best blade but i enjoy it) or take the store credit and apply it to a online knife purchase you actually would use or enjoy

idea#3
occasionally if i can't do the above with gift knives i will simply leave it in my car or in a tool box/bag and try to use my knife for things i would never think about using it for. such as

- i keep a cheap kershaw near buy as a pencil sharpener, i hate cleaning graphite marks off my zt0300
- trimming the xmas tree with no worry of sap on my edc
- using it to carry while on the boat or in the ocean with the harsh salt water
- cleaning the wax out of menorah lol (3 more days!)
- not that i wouldn't use a my edc knives for these tasks but when i can i try to keep them a little neater

Donate them to the local PD, military base, scouting lodge etc. Most cops and soldiers can afford nicer but can always find use for cheapy folders. The only gifts I really cringe at are decent looking knives that have garrish logos such as "Harley Davidson" or Joe Camel tokin' a stick on them. These, I arm the homeless with along with off color sharpies like magenta and canary yellow so they can add some "flare" to their cardboard signs.
