I've got a bunch of knife boxes and packaging lying around. Just wondering what you guys do with them? Do you store your knives in them, save them for resale, repurpose them, something else?

Urmm usually toss them. But then again my knife collection is a working collection that isn't going anywhere.

I generally keep the boxes for a while, in case of resale/trade; blister packaging goes immediately in the trash, and is probably a good sign that it won't matter if decide to part with it later. Any kind of certificate of authenticity or serial numbered paperwork gets kept as long as I have the knife.

Put them up for sale in "Gadgets and Gear"

Who knows who's missing what....

Edit: (Just FYI : you will need a membership upgrade to do that)

I wish everyone would just agree not to save the boxes and we could all sell and buy without having to worry about them. They're completely useless! It's especially annoying when companies pack their knives in large boxes that don't fit standard mailing packages so you have to pay extra to ship. But I've caved in to the pressure to keep boxes for resale and now have a giant drawer completely full of them.

Years ago I tossed gun boxes (Colt), now those very boxes are worth $100's each had I saved them. So with that in mind, I keep the knife boxes although I never expect to sell anything or believe they will have any added value what so ever even with the knife/box match. But you never know. I have a rubbermaid tub especially for empty knife boxes and another for knives that are stored inside the box that I don't have any interest in using.

I agree with this, I have a freaking closet dedicated to stupid boxes, just in case I decide to sell.

I put my empty knife boxes in my empty shoe boxes.
I've got plenty of both, but I also have all of the knives and the shoes as well.

I keep all my boxes. I usually punt all my knives at some point and i know many buyers appreciate if you have all the original materials. In a way i understand. If the owner is mindful enough to save the box and keep all the materials in good condition it may say something about how much care they may have put into the knife itself. And it kinda helps bridge the gap mentally between getting a new or used knife. As a buyer if the knife is in good condition you justify it a bit betterif all the materials it came with new are there and intact. At least thats what i tell myself. I know one thing is for sure. Its always the first thing someone asks me about when someone wants to buy something from me. "You got the original box and papers?". For me avoiding that conversation alone is worth me keeping them.

Thanks for giving me some things to consider. I just saw KA-BAR post something about a 100+ year old box sent to them. Not that I'd save them that long, but they could be worth some money after a while.

Some of my knives are stored in the boxes. Others contain knives that came without boxes.
When you collect (having more knives than you actually use) the box offers more.
It will protect your knife and show information; model name, number, production date.
Companies do change their boxes for various reasons, they also change the paperwork that comes with them.
Some add company cnfo or a small catalog or even a free sample of a knife care product.
That all adds to the collection.
Some boxes are famous (EKI s are most often dented), sometimes it is important, because of the production-period.
Boxes and other containers (REKATs tubes, Dalton s nets,...) keep collectors busy.
Take a look at the discussions, when CRK changed their boxes not too long ago.

I started a summary document on my computer documenting knives I own and have purchased in recent years. I still miss some. Not really a data base, just a date referenced summary... bought this knife and a description. If I know something interesting, I include it. If I had 100's of knives, this could get a bit unruly as far as finding something. But, it is what it is. As I said, I keep the boxes. I wouldn't rank them as high as firearm boxes, but I do save them keeping them dry and unmarked. I know eventually I will have problems matching up sheaths with knives as I often keep leather sheaths (especially handmade) just in my storage tubs. I try to put a little tag on the sheath, but some I will just have to wing if I ever need to deal with it. I tag all my computer-electronic charges and so forth as in time, it had become a real mess. Old, new, currently active......
