What to do with older passaround knives?

Why not just start doing that:

I would suggest to offer it at a lowered price for people who participated in the passaround, maybe 10% off or something.

All i can say, is that i'd be interested in owning them. I don't care if they're not new. I like the private auction idea better than the raffle, but i think this should be kept to BF folks only.

However, if you did toss an open auction out on ebay, and any money generated went into more passaround knives, that would be good too. I feel ebay will bring the best price overall.

maybe blade auctions would be better as prices stay realistic so perhaps one of us could actually win them, not likely on ebay, where full retail price has little effect on what ppl will bid.

My main interest in passarounds, is the chance to own the knife, playing with it is fine, but owning it is the prize. I'd like to see as many chances to win knives as possible, it sorta makes the whole thing worthwhile.

i like the raffle/community member sale ideas best. i know i'd love to get some of these passarounds at a lower price.

Hey...

I think they should go to the Graveyard of knives...

Some place where they go and never to return in one piece...

Cliff Stamp...

Kind of like the Vet putting your dog to sleep....

Got any pics of the reground knife I'd be interested to see what you did, I had similar Ideas for the knife.

T., my verbage was misleading, I put a 600 grit belt on my 72" grinder and went over the blade and handle and took out the nicks, scratches and stains. I then ran it up the grits to 2,000 grit to polish the whole knife. Then I put a new edge on it with a diamond Lansky and polished it with a Spyderco. I did not alter the shape of the knife, just made it look brand new! BTW, it is an incredable knife. Gets razor sharp, holds the edge well, and feels great in the hand.

that's my vote, it should especially help with the more costly knives (Reeves, Busse's, etc...)

I would love to buy the knives . Or even a raffle would be kewl .
I would also like to get 3 or so in a longer passaround . I found that the 3 days is not very much to use a knife. With me workin til like 6 am to 6 pm . Then finding the time to mail it back off. I loved all the passarounds but only wish I could have kept it a week or so .

You 'moderatin' elsewhere 'bastid'...how about you think about taking the time, (when you have the time of course), to take my original sugestion under advisement (again), and (now) allow a little (more) time to pass between passaround/along dates?

To wit; in the past I've stated that my work entails that I travel on short notice to foreign lands, and whereas I'd very much like to participate in 'pass arounds', and would be more than happy to do so...I couldn't commit to an 'exact' date that that I could ship foward on.

Having just come back from a one day advance notice, 2 week trip to the interior of Mexico, a trip that was originally scheduled to be 1 week, is a case in point.

Maybe, a little flexibility here would/could help? That's my read anyway, YMMV ;)

(I know, our jobs are 'different'folks, but that fact doesn't dull my enthusiasm one iota. The simple fact is, I need to be up front about the situation, and if by doing so I preclude myself from said pass-arounds, so be it...but at least I was upfront about it...)

The problem with allowing more than a week is total time of the project. Let's say i kick $45 in for a passaround, and 9 guys get it before me for a week each, factor in shipping time, thats 18 weeks before i get to handle the knife. 20 weeks before a raffle.

Thats *IF* everyone mails it on as agreed in the time specified.
Four to Five months dude! That's just way too long.

If you ended up gone for a year with the knife we all kicked in for, it would'nt be very cool.

Add that i would'nt hold a passaround for more than 3 days on my end, just to be extra-courteous and keep it moving.

But the point is that you need to be able to commit to 7 days or less for mailing forward, otherwise you're holding up the show that already drags on for half a year. I don't feel more than three days is needed to check out and review a knife, and if the rules changed to more than a week, i seriously doubt i'd ever buy in for that long of a passaround. Higher chances of the knife never getting seen again IMO.

I think that for either old or multiknife passarounds the time might be extended. I do think though that for first run knives that a shorter time period work a little better for all.

Perhaps offer them up here again for us relative newbies, maybe in a package. Then offer them up for passaround on Knifeforums. Knifeforums is new territoru for passarounds and they may be interested :)
Then raffle or whatever?
