I have a box that I throw my used knives into. Those that have been carried hard, put away wet more than once, sharpened and stropped several times, and probably expended 40-50% of it's "life".

There are a few knives from Microtech, Benchmade, Strider as well as a few customs. For example I have a Rinaldi LEO that was carried and used on a load of hunting trips and has gutted a load of game, and chopped and cut more junk than I can remember. The knife still has at least 60% of it's useful life remaining but she sure isn't pretty any more.

Is there a market for these, how to you assign a value or is there some way to gift them to someone who will find a use for the remaining life?

I just don't know...............................................

I'll take whatever you got. :D

I don't know how you could sell beat up users.

Swapmeets? If they are still in mechanical condition, how about sharpening them up and sending them to our troops? Or donate them to some non-profit thing, like Big Brothers Big Sisters, or Good Will.

Sharpen them up as best you can and give them to the youngsters in your life, introduce them to quality knives. As they grow older they will appreciate what they grew up with and carry on the tradition.

I'm sure there are some deserving soldiers in Iraq who could put some well worn superb quality knives to good use.

I can find you the right contact if you need.

sell them to poor students like me who can't afford the really expensive knives but still like a good working tool. I may be interested in a couple. I can't seem to send you a pm.

I think you should post them in the Exchange section, just say "Users For Sale" or something. Then sell them to poor young folks like me. :D So if you wanna get rid of your old beat up ugly Strider, just shoot me an e-mail... :D

1) Donate them to a local Boy Scout Troop.
2) Leave them in hunting blinds to be found by the next guy.
3) Return them to the maker for refurbishing.
4) Keep them. He who dies with the most knives wins.
4) Drop 'em in unsuspecting passenger's carry-on luggage and watch the fun from the airport coffee shop.

I have to say I like these. If all else fails E-bay might surprise you with a good little explination of the knife and a lil story can go a long way. But I guess some of the memebers might be deserving too :)

I'm a big fan of these two ideas. Get them to people who will use them and respect them. Another idea is talk with the Bladeforum mods and see about a fund raising auction for a member in need. If you just sell it as a box and list some of the big name stuff and make sure people understand they were your users, if would do really well. You could also just ebay them and donate the money, I think many charities would rather money in lue of knives.

Or just send them to me, I'll give you $5 for the box....:)

PASSAROUND!

Seriously, they'd be perfect, enough used that the value is not a hinderance, yet enough life to figure out if they are something the tester wants to buy.

I believe there is a definite market. Play with the price, but the knives you indicated would sell at some point.

If you just want to clear them out, I second the recommendation for a scout troop. In fact, I think there is a member here that accepted some donated knives last year. Does anyone remember? Was it Bagheera?

Now, THAT might be fun, and a good way to pass the time.:D.:D.

What a lovely problem.
Now today I'm in a good mood and a problem is an oportunity (is my therapist reading :rolleyes )

How about taking the most beat up and "tactical",place in your window.
Anotate thus "Bad guys.. I wore this one out waiting for you!"

I'm sure you have already left something everywhere it may prove usefull but there are lots of them...

You could re-cycle the terrible and truly tired.
Take folder.BLUNT lock at 90% now that looks like an interesting door handle to me. Afix apropriately.
Tap (sorry faucet) handle?
Lavatory handle
door knocker(cut blade down drill hole bolt through use handle fulcrum)
Can't believe I've never seen a car gear shift customised with a knife handle (Hmm.. thinking Buck 110 with the gripy bits)
How about an auto light switch?
Got access to braising kit? What about tacking some together for a plant pot stand?

You say you chuck them in a box.
What about a new way of displaying them?
Go on, bolt a rough bit of log to the wall and stick em in it.

Sorry should that have been 101 uses for my broken toys?

: ;)

I think that you could probably sell them, for the right price. I am sure a lot of people just getting into knives, or those who don't have much to spend on knives, would just love getting a high quality knife at a low price. Most likely they wouldn't care that the knife has been beaten up a bit, as long as it is sharp and functions well.

Donation is another good idea if you feel like going that way. I am sure any troop overseas would greatly appreciate a good user knife without having to worry about paying a high price, or breaking in a new knife.

How bout having a raffle/contest or some type of giveaway?

The only thing I would say would be don't chuck them, it would be a shame to get rid of a knife that is still good just because it isn't so pretty any more. Especially when many people out there don't care about that and just want a good knife.

GIVE THEM TO SERVICEMEN SERVING THE COUNTRY

theyre risking their arses for ours........

just a thought

ditto, send them to our troops, ag russell could help you get in touch with someone who could help there.

Sell them. They still have some value, perhaps 30%-50% of the original price depending on condition.
