What to do?

Are the pics still going to show up in magazines? Are the proto's still going to appear at shows a year ahead of production? If so, then a thread in a forum is largely irrelevant.
You quoted me. I said "we've opted on not allowing First Look threads, and only showing products when we're ready to ship." Is the thread still relevant?

Personally, I don't think the pre-production hype and long waits on preorder lists (really, preorder lists at all) are really serving the company. I'm sure the model serves to generate more than a few impulse buys; and while that might be good for the short-term bottom line it does nothing to cultivate long term customer satisfaction.
I hear an opinion, but not much more than that. It's best you expand your opinions with some kind of explanation, otherwise it falls mostly on deaf ears.

Welcome to the forums.

Given the theft of IP and the ungratefulness you've experienced, I completely understand this policy shift. I (along with the many others who've posted along these lines) would be shocked and pleased to win or be given something. The fact that you go out of your way to do so and still get that behavior is just crazy.

These changes covered every gripe I had about Kershaw to date... it's quite amazing how they got them all and I'm sure my post about it didn't contribute to it at all since I kinda came out of nowhere and these decisions were probably submitted weeks in advance

As a recent Chris Reeve owner again apparently it takes 6 months or more to receive a custom Sebenza with all the personalized goodies according to that subforum... different fanbases have different tolerances for waiting I suppose.

Hope you guys are having a happy holiday season!

You sure did, WTF are you talking about anyway? I didn't hear griping about Kershaw.

Very good, and well said, Thomas.

I'll see you at SHOT here in a few weeks.

Don't worry, I won't ask for a free knife. :D

Oh I was just bitching and whining about wait times and the time between announcement and product hitting shelves alongside multiple delays from a company that I have always held in the utmost highest regard. I kept it mature of course and having never spoken to Thomas before or knowing what who he was, I was then treated with the utmost respect as a disgruntled customer and then absolutely pleased to see this list of changes come.

It certainly changed my mindset about the brand and how they handle business

I would hate to see this forum closed down again, but I can see how it would be more trouble than it is worth.

I believe that the instant gratification expected by the Internet generation is to blame for what some see as a "long" wait time. As for looking a gift horse in the mouth, some people are just stupid and rude.

I'm new here and I'm assume you're a Kershaw rep.?

I carry a Kershaw ken onion at work. I like it. My. 02 cents.

Thomas is THE Kershaw rep! :D

In my experience, nobody else in his position has given so much back to the community, from responding to questions (both pointless and pointed) to hosting product GAW's, to outright giving products to people. He has enhanced Kershaw's reputation here and elsewhere simply by making himself available. Can't ask for more than that.

So, I've said it elsewhere, and I'll say it here...

Thanks Thomas.

Hey - easy now on the scorekeeping!! Chris Reeve came out and burned his 19th and 20th posts in the last week giving a couple tech tips to the crowd - one was on hand sharpening too. I thought the forum servers were going to overload and shut down!! :D :D :p

I just wanted to put my 2cents in.

I personally do not understand why anyone would complain about the wait time on a item that they had not paid a single dime for. Now I understand someone who complains about waiting for an item that they had paid money for and had not recieved in a decent time frame, or if the time frame would have taken longer than expected, then I also understand someone complaining about not hearing about their purchase from either the distrubitor, manufacturer, or shipping company.

In the end, its a free item, and depending on the method of being shipped, can take weeks. So pretty much, quit complaining. It's not like Kershaw is making money by giving items out, all they are doing is giving back to their faithful and near fanatic fans.

This is actually my first post on the entire forum, and I do not even own a Kershaw knife. Not from lack of wanting one, more like the funds to purchase a Kershaw is just not available right now for me. I hope to join the Kershaw "family" here soon though.

I will admit to not reading the whole thread, just saw it this morning. Sorry if this is covered ground.

First question, Should Kershaw stop previewing new products before they are ready to go to market?
Yes, I think it might be necessary considering the situation with the 077. I would certainly cut the time down between a preview and availability to something that makes it impossible for "competitors" (a true competitors pride and self worth would not allow such a thing) to get a copy to market ahead of yours.

Second question, Should you stop doing open giveaways because of complaints about the product, and the time it takes to get it?
Without specific examples I would say No.
Personally I would not give away anything less than a perfect example of my product, and I would make sure that the "winner" received it in absolutely the least time possible. If you had a "Kershaw collector club" or some such group, that would be a great place to give away blems or seconds, or just a production piece that has not necessarily been scrutinized, and they would probably be more willing to wait to get it. If however you open a giveaway to the whole forum (the public), you should make sure to put your best foot forward.
I have owned Kershaw knives for a long time (my first was an "Outlaw Bill" lockback and I still have it) so I know the product and would be willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but if a knife company that was new to me did a giveaway and I won, I would be less than impressed if the knife had even minor issues and/or took more than a week to get to me after they had my address.

I don't know how people act but I'm gonna get me a black Chive with the Damascus blade! I've been looking for a little tac folder for a long time and this fits the bill. I didn't know about them until the Kershaw rep posted so I decided to look at there knives. Just a cool little knife imo!

Steve

I told my dad about how people were complaining about the time it took for their free knife to show up, or went on to whine about the quality.
He just couldn't believe that people would be that assinine...it took recounting of many specific times that has happened on the forum to convince him, and he still had trouble believing it.

And I agree with his idea regarding complaining about the F&F on a free knife: you only get the right to whine if it cuts your fingers off.
Short of that, just shut up.:)

All I have to say is "thank you."

Kershaw, you have always been my favorite knife company. However, there is a responsibility that you had never taken seriously. Blue balling.

I have been blue balled by Kershaw way too many times, and it has always been because of these "first looks," or similar pre-marketing scenarios. I still walk with a limp because of never receiving a speedform. I think that was about a years worth of teasing and hope, all turned to blue.

Again, I thank you for ending the teasing.

Ignorance is bliss. ;)

Its too bad it came to this, but I totally understand the reasonning behind the decions. The First Look threads we're some of my very my favorite threads. That being said, I understand where you guys are coming from. Disreputable & shady companies(cough, Microtech, cough) are stealing & copying your designs & that is a serious problem. Also, while I can understand people being upset about delayed release dates, I would rather wait until it gets done right, than have you guys rush it out. IMO, Kershw is one of the best companies out there when it comes to customer service, & I am super excited for the new lineup, no matter when they're gonna come out. I will be buying the Knockout, Echelon, Cryo, & ZT 0560 this year, for sure. As for the giveaway thing, wow, just, wow! How could anyone possibly complain about a free knife? I mean, its a ..FREE... KNIFE! I would be thrilledd, even if it took a year to arrive! Talk about ridiculous. You rock, Thomas, & Kershaw rocks. Keep up the good work, many of us apreciate it greatly.
