thinking of doing some modding to my 14. i already know im going to attempt to make some nice handle scales for it, but other than that i cant think of anything (i already striped and forced a patina). so basicly what else can or should i do? (i dont want to do any drastic changes to the blade itself)

edit: also should i do pins or screws for the handles?

Use the hell outta it.

Seriously, I like modding knives, and Ethan blames me for all the modding that goes on here, because he says I was the first person he saw do anything to his blades. I tell him he's old, senile and needs a nap. Crazy old fart.

:D

The only reason I mod a knife, is to make it work for me better. A squared spine is probably the most important feature to me. Square the bitch up, and go make you a pile of fatwood scrapings to put in a tinder tin.

Or make you some micarta handles, so, its not so fatiguing on the hand when you carve you a rabbit poking stick, then go poke the rabbit, and cut his ass up with your 14.

Or whittle you a 3L coke bottle full of cedar shavings to put in your boots when you're not wearing them. Remember to dump them out, as cedar splinters are toxic.

Make a bowdrill kit and go show off in front of your wife's friends. Make them jealous of your wife, then, go poke the wife. :D

Hell, man, I don't know, there are only a few mods I do to my knives, strip'em, square'em, and I'm of the mind anymore that forced patina's are for sucka's, let that shit happen naturally.

Either way, I expect to see pictures, and lots of them. Hold on.........

Ya dig?

well a bit late on the patina. also im a bit young to have a wife XD. and i would still like to somehow make it mine/my own/my precious. (did i mention i just finish watching all 3 lord of the rings movies again?) XD

im really thinking on attempting some filework
so anyone got some tips on that?

Pimp it out, get it hard chrome dipped, put some spinners on it. Maybe get a gem encrusted handle. :D

Go all out, and check with Crimsonfalcon or TMHunt for info on the file work.

My all time favorite mod to a BK14 was the one done by Nsevens89 here on our forum:

While I dislike the swedge on the rear, I love the repurposing of the extra scales from the tweener, and I love how he removed the "hump" from the back of the knife blade to make it a little more shaped like an izula. Plan on getting me a new 14 here before long and trying my hand at something like this.

I could be wrong, but that rear portion of the spine (on an unmodified BK14) has a noticeable "bump" on the back, and while I am not certain, I think it comes from Toooj using Solidworks to 3D the knives, and using a spline in that portion. Darn tricky splines!

well i dont really have the tools for that, nor the money to buy them :P. thanks though ;)

After stripping, forcing patina, and getting new scales on my 16... I took off the new scales, put on a lanyard, spent two days sharpening it free hand (or try to) and joined forum for bushcraft so I can find new ways to abuse my 16.

use it as much as you can, thatll give you the best way to mod it

the more i use my 14 , the more i do little things to tweek it for what i use it for

Get good at sharpening it, or re-profile the edge into a convex. I don't think convexing a small knife like this holds much of an advantage, except I like the idea that when I'm backpacking all I need is a few pieces of sandpaper to get a dull blade super sharp.

I'd say use your blade and then figure out what you wanna change about it...I just jumped in half of the time and starting grinding up blades without giving much thought on how what I'm doing will change or improve the blade...Oh well, thats just cos I'm a dumb kid with little foresight :D.

Permernant pins for the handles since I find (if your using removable hardware) that it begins to rust under the scales if its stripped...Plus, its much easier to do IMO. I would say square off the spine for ferro rods, make some scales and convex the edge. If your gonna use the stock sheath obviously make your scale design still fit but if not, add "make a new sheath" onto your list.

This is what I did to my eskabar...

you could ditch the patina and etch it :D or leather wrap it, It's super comfy and cheaper to do than scales.

i like the patina, it gives it character. tried a wrap didnt really like it too much, also i really prefer the looks of wood :P and i can do the scales for about 15 bucks all together :P so not too big of a deal.

Sounds good man :) to each their own (plus the 14 wears any mod like a champ)

Bleach and Gun Blue, then convex the edge, square up the spine and USE! I went into mine with the intent to wrap the handle, but I love the feel of the metal!

The BK-14 is a great platform to modify and use the hell out of cause in the end, your out 32 bucks if you completely trash it!

my 14 seems to luv a convxed edge!
i added a little jimping and made micarta scales also

My 14's been clipped, stripped, re-cliped, jimped, and has a patina forming from when I cut up an apple and forgot about it....for two days. It doesnt look pretty but it does the job damn well.
