What to edc when you don't need to edc?

Coming from someone who uses their knives a lot... carry whatever the heck you want... and do not feel bad or obligated... and another tip... try living minimalist for a bit... IE limit yourself and see. I will also tell you a secret... A lot of knife guys could probably get by with just a SAK Classic... I carry one all the time because you can throw it in your pocket and its no big deal. I still carry a BK15, and a SAK Farmer because of what I typically have to do with my knives. There are lots of blades out there and one of the joys of knives is carrying whatever you want because you can... and another joy IS ACTUALLY USING THEM! Sure I have some knives in my safe but they have been used to death and I want to save whats left of them for my children. Still though I will carry and use them from time to time. Honestly a good rounded EDC system is dependent on what your needs are. Part of being a human being is carrying a blade... its no different than putting on clothes... as far as human history goes, just a short time ago everyone carried blades because it was their main eating tool, and a necessity. It is only recently that a majority of people do not carry blades. It is something that we have used since we walked on this earth.

Primary blade, flashlight, lighter, and multitool... You really cant go wrong with that combo. Heck... Blade, fire, light... (However, If you are looking for a magic potion, or to see the light... you wont, it is 100% up to you.)

When you have no specific task in mind, carry whatever. Since I use mine at work, I need specific things. When I work freezer, I need a lock back because of the gloves. I usually carry an Endura. When I work cashier, I need something small that is quick to open and close so I can open change rolls before customers know there's a knife out. One mistake I did was buying a Microtech Socom in tanto. I liked the knife, but a tanto point was not useful. I just traded it a couple days back. When you have no specific task, there is no need to buy a specific knife, so you are unlimited

A LIGHTER! NEVER THOUGHT OF A LIGHTER!
I edc primary blade, sak, flashlight, multitool...BUT NO LIGHTER!
Jajaj, I saw the light...but ironically, now I'm more complicated than before! I DON'T NEED A LIGHTER! I don't smoke, I don't cook, nothing.
Oh, the irony! searching for enlightment, found it physically and figuratively, but the added light brought more darkness!

Hello,

I like how you tell it like it is. Just because you dont need a knife doesn't mean you shouldn't carry one. Its sad that it against the law to carry a knife in your country but you know the legal risks being a lawyer. I would definitely take off what ever clip you have on any of your knives and put a low profile clip on it that looks like a pen clip. I use this one on a few Spyderco's I want to keep unnoticed http://usaknifemaker.com/folding-kn...lip-formed-tumbled-040-low-rider-stealth.html You just need to open up the holes a little for them to line up. Mods please remove link if USAknifemaker.com isnt a paid member.

Have a good one,

Chris

great resource site, thanks!

Get a Spyderco Salt series folder. No rust and super light weight! The Salt1 is perfect for EDC.

just carry them because I LIKE KNIVES.

Is there a better reason to carry them?

I work in an office pretty much all day, no need to cut anything but string, cut up my lunch if the need arises, but other than that, no need for them on a daily basis.

I just like 'em!!

I love knives, my collection is always growing.
But I don't need them. I don't open boxes, nor cut carboard, no food prep, etc.
Zero outdoors activity.
Basically I'm a fat middle aged lawyer.

Soooo what to edc?
Right know I'm taking out a bucks 102, a sak and a cold steel voyager tanto plain xl.
And a leatherman mini.

Obvious overkill, just carry them because I LIKE KNIVES.

What would be your edc recommendation for someone who doesn't have an specific need, but just likes to carry knives?

You don't open letters/mail ever? Letter openers work but this is a use that I have to believe that you have. I am a CPA (Desk jockey) and open mail every day.

^^ Had to stop watching the vids, could feel my IQ dropping from all the yos and hommies haha.... great looking knife up until it was deployed, ugly looking blade

Man, you're the best candidate for EDCing whatever the hell you like. You can carry a $3000 custom or a $25 Opinel because you don't have any specific task at hand. You could decide to carry a bunch of stuff one day and just a single simple slipjoint the next. If I were you, I'd buy what I like and carry whatever I please.

Precisely. Carry what you think looks cool.

That said, we are really, really intelligent guys (), but even we cannot tell you what you think is cool looking.

I carry three knives....large folder is either a Pat Crawford Custom Kasper(self defense in various configurations) or a Wilkins Ghost Dog Pup. Medium or small folder is a CRK Mnandi in various configurations. Small utility is either a SAK(many options) or a Swiss Tool and flashlight has been Mac's Custom Tri EDC, Lenslight Mini Ti or Surefire. I haven't found anything that isn't covered by that config......I will say that my EDC bag has a number of firearm options(revolver and auto) and one or two fixed blade options for use as needed. Carry whatever works, enjoy whatever works and use whatever you carry.....otherwise it is just wasted space and un-needed weight.

To me, the blade grind was one of the selling points. Has curves like a woman :p

Ok, here's some good advice...if you really enjoy your knives and you can afford it...buy some quality. Buy a knife that when you pull it out and look at it you will feel inspired! When you open the blade and hear that perfect solid "thwack" you will smile. Buy a beautifully engineered piece of human craftsmanship. Something that will make you feel awe at how close we can get to perfection when we really apply ourselves!

Sorry, don't know which one that is, but the search is half the fun!

You say you don't need a knife, but I'll tell you this....the second you stop EDC'ing will be the moment when you will need a knife! That's how it always works. Whenever I leave the house without a blade or multi-tool thinking I won't need them, sure enough a situation will arise where I could have used one. Not always, but alot. That's Mr. Murphy for ya. Its why CCW instructors will tell you to carry AT ALL TIMES because if trouble ever finds you, it will most likely be on that day when you decided to leave your gun at home.

Another interesting data is that in my country, all type of carry is forbidden. So yes, it's equally ilegal to carry a SAK or a concealed cold steel two handed broadsword.

Well in that case go for the broadsword. Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

That's the downside of excessively restrictive legislation, if you're going to break it anyway you might as well break it big.

What would be your edc recommendation for someone who doesn't have an specific need, but just likes to carry knives?

Look at the William Henry B10 Lancet series of knives. Small EDC that I often carry in the office. I have come to really like the clip case and the William Henry button lock is just terrific. I have a couple B10s that I often carry often at and then sometimes switch to something bigger at night.

In that case just grab a peanut and stick it on your keyring. After all if you don't use it for anything you're only going to want it in emergencies and being sealed up the fuel will last as long as you need (although check it every six months).
