What to get for the H & K USP .45?

I will be getting an H & K USP .45 with my tax returns.

I will be using it for paper-target shooting at the local range, and some occasional plinking.

It's been a while since I have purchased any firearm, let alone a handgun. I'm out of touch and rusty in regards to all of the new gear and after market improvements out there.

For those who own the USP, is there anything I should get or modify right away, to make it an immediately better firearm, ie more accurate, controllable, etc.?

What is the best holster for non-conceal carry?

Thanks.

Very cool....

I have an HK USP .45 full size. I love it. I don't think it really needs a whole lot of mods at all. If you are finicky, you can spring for a match trigger (about $100) but it's not that easy to install. I don't mind the stock trigger.

A Tac light is very cool.

For non concealed carry, I like webgear. I recommend a low ride nylon tactical holster.

Make sure you research the 9 available variants of the HK USP before you buy.

I agree with BobHWD, there really aren't that many mods a USP needs. If you plan on shooting only targets I would invest in some good adjustable sights and a couple of extra mags.

Awesome info. Thanks guys!

Bob, would a Tac light be a small Surefire? And can I install that myself?

What other variations are there besides compact/full size, stainless/blued, match/non-match? Thanks.

dewingrm, Can I install the new sights, or does that have to be done by a smith? Thanks.

What to get for that new HK USP 45? How about a box big enough to fit it in, and the proper legal paperwork to ship it to me? ;) :D

Man, I want one of those pistols so bad, I can't stand it! Ever since I read the reviews on them, where they torture tested one for 10,000 rds and it only shot better as time went on. They couldn't get the damn thing to jam, no matter what ammo they stuck in it. That's my kind of auto pistol!

First thing you need to do with that new USP 45 is to shoot the hell out of that avatar of yours! It's scaring the hell outta me, and probably everbody who sees it. :D

Those reviews are quite impressive. I also read one where they somehow jammed a slightly oversized bullet into the bore and then fired a regular cartridge; the dummy bullet was cleared and the only noticeable damage was a slight bulge in the bore. The gun then went on to fire a respectable 2.5" group at about 25'.

Mr. Barlow likes the H&k too. They're both German imports. :)

I have a USP SW .40 with a polished slide, and a friend has the Model 23(?) which is the civilian version of the SOCOM pistol. Everything you heard is true about the accuracy and the reliability.

Both os us would like to get the actual H&K laser attachment that snaps onto the frame rails. We did some checking; it appears that this light was introduced to the public for a short while, then restricted to law enforcement. There are many fine clones.

The tactical light fits right on the rail made for this purpose. It takes about two seconds to snap on or snap off. The system is integral to the gun. There is no installation to speak of.

There is also the "Expert" USP.

Also, there are nine full variants of the basic USP.

You can install sights yourself if you know what you're doing and have the proper tools.

Just get the ITI laser/light combo. It's a lot cheaper. I actually bought the HK laser system for my HK and later found it was made for HK by someone else. With the HK stamp it cost twice as much.

I wasnt going to post, but I cannot resist. The first thing that you absolutely positively have to get is 2 or 3 thousand rounds of practice and training ammo. Then decide what if anything you need. Now, if you WANT stuff, that's different. As time goes by I find myself actually taking stuff off guns instead of adding to.

However, I have a real weakness for good holsters. A top of the line Kramer, Rosen, Sparks or the like rig will be a worthwhile investment, as would their counterparts in kydex.

Have any of you guys considered a Ruger Mini-14? Thought i'd ask twice just in case.

Isn't that kind of like comparing apples and oranges? How is a Mini-14 like an HK USP?

Actually, that's like comparing Skittle's to acorn squash.

But if he was asking just because this is a gun thread, then I would say, yeah, I have always liked the Mini-14 and would consider it if I was looking for that type of rifle.

I'd have to say, "No." I'm not particularly fond of Mini-14s. I do have a couple of AR-15's, an AUG, and a few HK rifles though. I personally like the HK rifle system the best out of all of them.

Best Regards,

Bob

Re the Mini-14
Highly under-rated. Really a lot of bang for the buck and a fun gun to shoot. Keep in mind its limitations, namely a fly-rod barrel that doesnt tolerate a lot of heat and do not festoon it with a lot of crap and it will be a winner. Avoid cheap mags. I see no need to spend mega trying to build a M4 when the Mini will do 99.99999% of the same things for a fraction of the price.

And its like comparing strudel to a hot dog

Fortunately, I've been collecting guns longer than I have been collecting knives...

Paid $209 for my HK-91. AR-15s were $200 each at Big-5. At the time Ruger Mini-14's were about the same price, maybe $50 less. It was easy to justify the HK and AR purchases in my mind. I guess I was lucky.

Those were the good old days, especially in CA :(

How does the muzzle kick of M4's compare to that of the Mini-14. I love shooting our mini but its got aweful muzzle rise. Not a bad kick just lots of rise. Please tell me the AR's are better because I want to buy one next year.
