What to have in the trunk?

Although the Netherlands is a country with very a high population density, I like to be prepared when I am on the road. The items that I always have in my car:

- first aid kit
- rain jacket
- few (multi)tools
- Victorinox Rescue Tool
- car blanket
- flashlight and spare battery
- mobile phone

When I have to make a longer car trip for work or visiting family, I take a bottle of water and Mars bar or such with me. And I have my EDC items with me.

How do I keep the water from freezing and bursting the containers?

MSR dromedary bags or regular one gallon milk-style jugs. Avoid Lexan Nalgene bottles. They're brittle and poisonous. Don't fill your bag or jug more than 3/4 full if it's likely to freeze.

In a winter breakdown situation frozen bags of water won't do you much good. Take the bags (or jugs) inside before any winter trip and swap the ice for liquid water.

Safe travels.
