What to say to a stranger when you see a knife clip on his pocket without...?

When I'm out in public, and I notice a stranger with a knife clipped inside his pocket, I want to ask him about his knife. But I can't decide what to say without alarming him or, worse, making him angry if he didn't want to be exposed or something. What do you think would be a good opening?

I just ask say "Hey, can I ask you a question?" Get an odd look with a yes, then ask them what kind of knife they are carrying.

Yeah. Beats having him catch you staring below the belt line. I tend to leave each to his/her own unless it's in a restaurant and someone orders something I like, THEN I'll ask!

You could say "Hey whats that bulge in you pocket?" but seriously don't talk to strangers. I have had good results of people whipping out there knives or flashlights, by using mine in front of them.

Maybe you could just ask him what he's got in his britches if you are that curious:)

Let him sniff your hand first to establish that you aren't a threat.

How about; "Hey, what kind of knife are you carrying?" Unless you're in a place like England people aren't too paranoid about carrying a knife.

Hell, I went up to a guy and told him his jacket wasn't covering his gun.

I basically leave folks to themselves. I don't want people asking me what's in my pockets so I follow that mindset...

Just ask him. People don't carry folding pocket knives for self defense. Those that claim they are carrying one for self defense are confused. It's a tool, not a weapon.

I don't know if I'd want to put a complete stranger on the spot like that. I agree with Babakanoosh45...

On the spot?
It isn't a difficult question or something that out of the blue. I'd take it he knows what knife he's carrying, hell, he's probably proud of it.

Do as you think best, brother. But you ought to prepare yourself for a "Mind your own business" retort as much as a "Cool, thanks for noticing!" response. Not everyone who carries a knife is a friendly.

"Is that a knife in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me"?

But really, I don't ask at all, I just don't care about pocket knives so much.

This is exactly how I act in public also. I want to be left alone for the most part and as long as I'm not being threatened in anyway I ignore people. Not like I'm some rude a-hole, I hold the door open for people say excuse me when needed etc etc but I would never walk up and talk to some random guy and ask him whats in his pockets. I would be very weary of somebody doing that to me and would have a why are you talking to me kind of attitude. But we're all different to each his own just don't be alarmed if you get some pissed off people lol.
