What to use to sharpen your CR knives?

I Only use the Sharpmaker to sharpen All of my knives. I use the 40 degree setting ( 20 per side ). Its also recommended by Chris Reeve, so how could you go wrong !!!

I have Japanese water stones. I like them, but they are difficult to get factory results with. Thick blades and hollow grinds are especially difficult, and pretty much anything with a significant secondary bevel. If it's a FFG with a zero grind or very tiny secondary bevel like a Murray Carter or kitchen knife they're great. If you don't mind re-profiling a blade to get a new edge, then they're great again. But they require a lot of practice and learning can be very frustrating. Don't practice with a knife you're not willing to instantly dull.

Sharpmaker is great for keeping blades sharp. If they go dull, send it in for a factory sharpening. If you get water stones, check out the pair that Murray Carter sells, and if you don't buy his set at least buy his two DVD's about sharpening, they're a huge help.

i use the sharpmaker for touch ups, and the edge pro apex for reprofiling.

i also find by polishing the edges on the edge pro, it makes touch ups far easier. with the edges smoothed from polishing, i can find the correct angle on the sharpmaker since it will have a smoother feel on the stones.

I currently use a sharpmaker for touch ups using the fine rods, ultra fine rods, and then finish up with a dry strop. Would like to get some compound for the strop and perhaps dabble with an Edge Pro down the road. That much dough can be a great start towards a new CRK! :D

That is my setup right now. EP for any reprofiling (just takes too much time to take out and setup, soak stones etc.) and Sharpmaker with the UF rods.

Although it seems I might be the odd man out here, I personally use the DMT Magna-guide sharpening system combined with coarse/fine and extra fine/extra extra fine diamond diafolds. I also use the 6,3, and 1 DMT diapastes to achieve a mirror finish on my sebenza.

I find that the diamond sharpening systems works great for s30v especially and has really improved my results above that of what I wa getting with my sharpmaker.

i would grind out any major dings should they happen either freehand on my arkansas/cryostolon or use my dmt aligner.

For touch ups, you can get hair-whittling on a sharpmaker with UF rods, with very little skill, though i find similar results last longer with a set of strops and some aluminum oxide/chromium oxide/ plain veg-tanned leather.

Just ordered a Spyderco Sharpmaker and 2 Ultra Fine Triangle Stones. Really looking forward to use it.

I use the edge pro for sharpening and a leather strop loaded with green compound to maintain the edge

Congrats, This is the exact combo I use. The ultra fine polish the edge making it super super sharp. I dont use them all the time, most of the time, I just use the brown for a really dull knife, then the fine white rods. If a knife is already pretty sharp, I either use just the white, or the ultra fine depending on the knife and how I feel about its edge.

I have used this style of sharpening system for 25+ years now beginning when I was very young using my dads crock sticks made by case, smiths, and such. The sharpmaker works just like them, plus its a vast improvement. I have also used the sharpmaker to sharpen scissors and such, so its pretty universal.

Let us know what you think of it when it arrives !

Make sure you watch the DVD at least twice. Then make sure you use the sharpie method where you mark the entire blade. This way, you can see where you are hitting the edge. It might take you a short time to get over the initial learning curve, but don't get discouraged. There is a reason why this system is so popular. FYI all my results are done at 20º setting on the sharpmaker.

Mark the entire edge like this.

You want your knife to get these results. You are only removing metal at the very edge and thus are sharpening the edge and not the bevel.

Eventually, with very light strokes on the UF you will get these results.
